The master of cinematic tension is back in his element. Renowned director Sam Raimi, famous for delivering unforgettable jump-scares that keep audiences on the edge of their seats, has made a striking return to horror with his latest thriller, Send Help. Known for injecting mischievous jolts of terror into his iconic Evil Dead franchise and the spiritual successor Drag Me To Hell, Raimi has even brought his signature spooky sensibilities to his blockbuster Spider-Man trilogy. Now, marking his first major foray back into the horror genre in 17 years, his new film presents a tense, psychological struggle for survival. The story revolves around two co-workers stranded on a remote desert island: Bradley Preston, an arrogant and unpleasant CEO portrayed by Dylan O'Brien, and Linda Liddle, a marginalized employee played by Rachel McAdams, as they lock horns in a brutal battle for dominance.
Grounded Terror with a Classic Twist
While the movie is packed with visceral moments involving blood, vomit, and various other unpleasant fluids, the narrative remains largely anchored in reality, devoid of any traditional supernatural elements. However, Raimi could not resist incorporating one delightfully chaotic dream sequence that pays homage to his classic Deadite style. In this specific scene, a guilt-ridden Linda is suddenly startled on the beach by the decaying, zombie-like corpse of Zuri. Zuri happens to be Bradley's girlfriend, who met a brutal end at Linda's own hands, a major spoiler that highlights the dark turn of the characters. Raimi admitted that he thoroughly enjoyed creating this mischievous fright, noting that the goal was simply to scare the younger viewers in the audience because they deserved it. The sequence features Zuri's demonic figure leaping directly toward the camera lens. While Raimi acknowledges that having a monster scream straight at the audience during a dream sequence is a bit cliché or hokey, he explained that it was incredibly entertaining to film and added a fun, theatrical flourish to the grounded plot.
The Hidden Dark Twist of Linda Liddle
This terrifying dream sequence does more than just startle the audience, it actively exposes the latent monstrosity lurking deep within Linda. Interestingly, earlier drafts of the screenplay featured an even more shocking revelation about Rachel McAdams' seemingly sympathetic character. Co-writer Mark Swift shared that the original script disclosed that Linda was actually the mastermind behind the plane crash that left them stranded. The writers had even penned a flashback sequence for the third act of the film to show exactly how she orchestrated the disaster. Although Raimi and the creative team absolutely loved this extremely dark twist, it proved very difficult to get approved and produced because of its incredibly bleak nature. Ultimately, whether causing the crash or surviving it, the film makes it abundantly clear that Linda Liddle is not someone to be underestimated.
