The primary objective behind this restructuring is the promotion of younger leadership, with the average age of the new Cabinet expected to hover around 46 years, aligning closely with the age of the newly appointed BJP president.
The Potential Exit of Rajnath Singh
The most significant speculation surrounds the potential departure of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Cabinet decisions regarding personnel are not made by the ministers themselves; instead, once a resolution is reached, the affected individuals are formally notified via a letter. Reports suggest that Rajnath Singh has already received such notification and is prepared for the upcoming transition. While finality is only achieved at the last moment, his exit currently appears highly probable.
As Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh holds a position on the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), a role he has occupied since 2014. His anticipated departure from the Cabinet would naturally terminate his membership in this committee. Sources clarify that this is not the result of friction with the leadership. Instead, the active political roles of his two sons are cited as a primary catalyst. His younger son, Neeraj Singh, was recently appointed as vice-president of the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, while his elder son, Pankaj Singh, is a sitting MLA from Noida. Party insiders suggest that retaining Rajnath Singh while both sons hold active political positions could expose the BJP to criticism regarding dynastic politics. Additionally, his age of 75 is considered a factor. Currently, there is no discussion about offering him an alternative post, nor is there an established convention to compensate departing ministers with secondary positions.
Implications for Other Cabinet Members
Several other ministers are expected to be affected by the reshuffle. Nirmala Sitharaman’s exit is viewed as almost certain. The government is reportedly considering assigning her a more significant organizational role in southern India. As the administration plans to introduce fresh economic initiatives ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, there is a desire to present a new face for these policies. Nevertheless, sources emphasize that there is no dissatisfaction with her performance, and she remains a fixture within the core team of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Potential successors for the finance portfolio include Shaktikanta Das, the current Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister who enjoys his confidence, and Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.
Hardeep Singh Puri’s future is also subject to scrutiny. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan may also see a change in responsibilities.
