The political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir has been thrown into sudden turmoil. Amid strong speculations regarding a cabinet expansion and reshuffle within the administration led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, all ministers have collectively tendered their resignations to the Chief Minister. This major political development, unfolding right before the swearing-in ceremony scheduled at the Lok Bhawan in Srinagar, has sharply escalated political tensions across the region. It now entirely rests upon Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to decide whose resignation to accept and forward to the Lieutenant Governor, and whom to retain in the cabinet.
Math Behind the Cabinet Expansion and New Faces
According to the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, the total number of ministers including the Chief Minister cannot exceed 9, which accounts for roughly 10 percent of the total assembly strength. Out of the existing five-member cabinet, reports indicate that the removal of one minister is virtually certain, while the rest are expected to be retained. Three to four fresh faces are slated to take the oath at the Lok Bhawan in Srinagar. Underlying tensions, ambitions for power, and factionalism within the Omar Abdullah administration have now spilled openly into the public domain.
Sharp Criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party
The Bharatiya Janata Party has strongly targeted the National Conference and the Omar Abdullah government over this entire political episode. Sharing a cinematic clip on its official X handle, the BJP launched a scathing attack on the administration. The party stated that the cabinet expansion visible on the surface is actually a reflection of internal fracture and deep-seated infighting. Accusing the administration of being entangled in corruption scandals, the BJP claimed that the government is solely focused on safeguarding its chairs, power, and wealth rather than caring for public promises or good governance.
