Pragati Kumari, hailing from Dumri village in the Satgawan block of Koderma district, has demonstrated this resilience by scripting an inspiring academic accomplishment despite immense emotional hardships faced during her early years.
Overcoming Childhood Tragedy Through Parental Support
Back in the year 2004, Pragati's family endured an immense calamity when a land dispute erupted into a mass murder, resulting in the killing of four family members, including her grandfather Kapildev Prasad Yadav. While the devastating incident cast a long shadow over the household, her father, Professor Naresh Kumar, resolved not to let this darkness affect his daughter's schooling. Shielding her education from the trauma and ensuring she remained focused on learning, his persistence laid the groundwork for her long-term academic growth.
Exceptional Performance in UGC NET Examination
That persistent dedication bore fruit when Pragati appeared for the June 2026 session of the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test in English. Out of a total of 300 marks, she secured 184 marks, translating to a remarkable 91.29 percentage. With this performance, she successfully qualified for the post of assistant professor and also met the eligibility criteria for research admission. Pragati observed that while difficult situations are an inevitable part of life, one must never lose courage or abandon personal ambition.
Three Pillars of Competitive Exam Success
Drawing from her journey, Pragati outlined three essential traits that every competitive exam aspirant must cultivate: patience, complete dedication, and consistency. She pointed out that failing to clear an examination on the very first attempt should never lead to despair or quitting. Instead, candidates need to evaluate their shortcomings and make another sincere effort, keeping their minds calm and moving steadily toward their primary goal through disciplined daily effort.
An Emotional Milestone for the Household
When the official results were declared, it was her father who first checked the scorecard online. Filled with pride and emotion, he approached her to express that she had brought honor to his name and that his years of hard work, struggle, and dedication had finally borne fruit. That heartfelt acknowledgment transformed decades of painful memories into an occasion of pure celebration for the entire family, with her father having stood beside her through every academic test.
Simultaneously, her mother, Swarnlata, maintained a completely supportive domestic environment, freeing her from everyday household distractions. Pragati recounted that her mother took care of every physical necessity during long study hours, ensuring that even a simple glass of water was brought directly to her desk. This constant care allowed her to immerse herself fully in her syllabus without disruptions.
Academic Journey from Gumla to BHU and Study Routine
Pragati commenced her early formal schooling in Basia, located in Gumla district. Moving ahead, she completed her intermediate schooling from St. Xavier's College in Ranchi. She then secured admission to Banaras Hindu University, completing both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in English literature.
Elaborating on the examination format, Pragati noted that the National Eligibility Test comprises two distinct papers. While the second paper is subject-specific, she warned aspirants against neglecting the first general paper, describing that mistake as potentially costly. Maintaining a balanced focus across both papers is vital for a high score. Furthermore, she advised that every candidate's desk must house three critical components at all times: the updated syllabus, a comprehensive question bank of previous years' exam papers, and structured revision materials to track progress and rectify weaker sections systematically.
