A 20-year-old from Ranchi has turned an ordinary material like clay into a full-fledged livelihood. Pushpa's handmade jewellery and paintings are no longer just a local favourite, they are now finding buyers in some of India's biggest metro cities.
A Childhood Shaped by Financial Struggle
Pushpa's parents are farmers, and the family's financial condition was never comfortable. That pushed her to think about earning early, so she could support her household. With that goal in mind, she enrolled in a fine arts programme and completed a twelve month course. During this time she learned how to paint, sculpt figures and design jewellery. Rather than look for a job once the course ended, she chose to build a brand of her own.
Clay Jewellery With a Signature Touch
Pushpa handcrafts necklaces and earrings out of clay. To give each piece its distinct look, she paints them with organic colours. These colours are not chemical based, they are extracted from fruits and vegetables, which keeps the products durable while still looking vibrant.
Sohrai and Warli Art Add to the Range
Her collection is not limited to jewellery. It also includes Sohrai style and Warli style paintings, two traditional art forms rooted in tribal culture, which Pushpa recreates in her own way.
Orders From the Government and a Following Among Wealthy Buyers
Pushpa says she regularly receives orders from the government. Beyond that, several women from affluent backgrounds have also taken a liking to her paintings, artwork and jewellery. Many customers even request customised pieces made to their own preferences, which she takes up as well.
Prices Range From Rs 200 to Rs 5000
Her jewellery is priced between Rs 200 and Rs 1000, while her paintings and other craft items cost anywhere from Rs 250 to Rs 5000. That range means her work is accessible even to buyers working with a modest budget.
