Enforcement authorities at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, Karnataka, have uncovered an ingenious attempt to smuggle precious metals into the country. Acting on actionable intelligence, the Bengaluru Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence intercepted two international travelers and confiscated 1,200.40 grams of fine gold valued at 1,78,88,360 rupees. The suspects devised a tactic that avoided carrying the contraband directly on their persons, attempting instead to bypass customs scrutiny by utilizing terminal baggage trolleys.
Surveillance Nets Travelers Arriving From Kuala Lumpur
The operation began when intelligence personnel received advance information regarding an incoming contraband consignment from an overseas flight. Acting swiftly, officials placed two specific passengers arriving in Bengaluru from Kuala Lumpur under discreet physical surveillance from the moment they entered the terminal. Enforcement officers observed the duo behaving suspiciously within the baggage reclaim area. During this monitoring, the two passengers were seen attaching concealed packages beneath airport baggage trolleys before deliberately stepping away, seeking to ensure that they would not be caught transporting the metal through the customs clearance lanes themselves.
Unwitting Travelers Targeted in High-Risk Smuggling Scheme
The passengers engineered the plot so that innocent, unsuspecting travelers would pick up the tampered trolleys to transport their personal luggage. The perpetrators remained at a calculated distance, trailing both the luggage carts and the travelers pushing them through the terminal concourse. Their strategy relied on letting these unawares passengers unknowingly wheel the illicit gold past customs-controlled zones. Once the trolleys crossed the security perimeter and entered public arrival spaces, the smugglers planned to retrieve the taped packages and slip away unnoticed.
Twelve Gold Biscuits Recovered from Concealed Packets
Intervening before the plan could materialize, intelligence officials halted the movement of the suspects and inspected the baggage carts. Upon examining the underside of the equipment, officers recovered two taped packets containing a total of 12 gold biscuits. Metallurgical assessments confirmed that the seized metal boasted a 999.9 fineness rating (24-karat), weighing precisely 1,200.40 grams with an estimated market value of 1,78,88,360 rupees. The entire consignment, along with the packing materials and the baggage trolleys used in the commission of the offence, was seized under the statutory provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, as investigators pursue further leads.
Persistent Concealment Trends at Bengaluru Terminal
This incident reflects ongoing attempts by smuggling syndicates to test novel concealment techniques at Bengaluru Airport. In an earlier interception at the same facility, officials caught two passengers attempting to traffic approximately 260 grams of gold metal powder. A thorough physical examination inside the airport valuable room revealed two hidden packets concealed around the waistbands of their trousers. Those passengers were promptly offloaded from their flight and handed over to local police for criminal prosecution. The latest trolley seizure highlights how smugglers are continually shifting tactics from bodily concealment to exploiting airport utility gear.
