Elected representatives regularly convene grievance redressal sessions to address everyday issues faced by citizens. People usually bring forward standard civic grievances at these gatherings, ranging from erratic electricity and water supply to pending pensions and damaged roadways. However, a recent official gathering in Karnataka witnessed an unusual plea when an agriculturalist bypassed administrative red tape to highlight an escalating social dilemma facing agrarian households.
Public Outreach in Mysuru Sees Unusual Matrimonial Appeal
The incident unfolded on Saturday, October 3, during the Praja Seva programme organized in the Piriyapatna locality of Mysuru district. A cultivator attending the session directly approached Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to state that women are increasingly refusing to marry men involved in farming. He pointed out that even though numerous agricultural workers possess independent housing and agricultural land, securing a bride has become extraordinarily difficult. The interaction was captured on camera and subsequently went viral across multiple social platforms.
Aging Unmarried Men and Mounting Psychological Distress
Describing the gravity of the rural situation, the cultivator explained that marriage prospects have dried up to the extent that men well into adulthood remain single. Underscoring the extreme distress in villages, he observed,
"35 से 40 साल की उम्र के कई ऐसे पुरुष हैं, जिनकी शादी नहीं हो पा रही है और वे आत्महत्या करने के बारे में सोच रहे हैं."When Chief Minister DK Shivakumar inquired about his specific expectations, the farmer urged the leadership to formulate solutions that encourage women to enter wedlock with farmers. He pleaded for active intervention, emphasizing that huge amounts of money are being spent on matrimonial efforts without results, and framed the struggle as a welfare issue concerning the futures of millions of people.
Preference for Salaried Careers Outweighs Farm Ownership
Expanding on the social shift, the farmer lamented that families show hesitation in offering their daughters to the very hands that cultivate sustenance for the populace. He indicated that parental preferences have shifted decisively away from the fields, with households actively favoring grooms backed by government employment, corporate careers, or stable monthly salaries. The unexpected matrimonial petition visibly surprised DK Shivakumar on stage. Notably, the challenge of finding matrimonial matches for young agriculturalists has surfaced as an ongoing social concern across rural Karnataka previously as well.
