A profound display of selflessness and human empathy has moved the state of Kerala to tears, following the death of a 37-year-old adventure instructor named Rajesh. Returning from a training session, Rajesh sacrificed his own life by giving his life jacket to a stranded farmer who was caught in the roaring floodwaters of a river in Kannur district. Recognizing his courageous sacrifice, state authorities have decided to accord his mortal remains a funeral with full state honors.
How the Tragedy Unfolded Along the Tejaswini River
The tragic event occurred on Saturday as Rajesh and his companions were returning home after conducting a river rafting training session. Upon reaching Kozhichal in Kannur district, they noticed a distressed crowd gathered along the banks of the Tejaswini River. A local farmer named Benny had become helplessly trapped in sudden flash floods caused by torrential water flow. Benny was submerged up to his neck and was clinging desperately to a solitary coconut tree to avoid being carried away.
As onlookers stood watching the terrifying scene unfold, the dangerous currents deterred anyone from entering the surging river. Being an experienced adventurist and rappelling instructor who had managed numerous high-risk rescue operations, Rajesh immediately leaped into the torrential waters without hesitating. Although he spent his career advising others to avoid dangerous water currents, he set aside his personal safety to answer the call of humanity.
A Brave Decision to Swap Safety for a Stranger’s Survival
Rajesh swam through the fierce currents and reached the submerged tree where Benny was holding on for life. Realizing that the farmer did not know how to swim, Rajesh made a swift decision. He unbuckled his own life jacket and secured it onto Benny.
Protected by the flotation device, Benny managed to navigate the floodwaters and safely reached the shore. However, Rajesh was left without any protective gear to battle the rushing river. As he attempted to swim back, he was caught in a powerful underwater whirlpool. Overwhelmed by the force of the water, Rajesh was unable to break free from the current and vanished into the river.
Rajesh’s Legacy as a Seasoned Rescue Trainer
Rajesh was not an ordinary swimmer but a highly skilled adventurer with extensive field experience. He had actively participated in major disaster relief efforts, including saving lives during the catastrophic 2024 Wayanad landslide. His background made him a trusted figure in emergency situations across the region.
He was actively associated with adventure clubs and regularly conducted trekking, mountaineering, and rappelling training workshops for National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, students, and youth groups. Despite his deep knowledge of safety protocols and water dynamics, his urge to save a stranger led him to face the hazardous river without any protective equipment.
Three Days of Searching End in Devastating Grief
Initially, Rajesh’s family members, colleagues, and friends held out hope that his extensive survival skills would allow him to reach safety. However, as hours turned into days, anxiety deepened across his community. Emergency search teams conducted an extensive operation along the downstream stretch of the river.
After a three-day search effort, emergency workers recovered Rajesh’s body from the lower reaches of the river on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, when his mortal remains were brought back to his hometown of Kaliyoor in Thiruvananthapuram, immense grief swept through the village and the wider state.
State Honors and Housing Support Announced by Government Leaders
To honor his heroic act of self-sacrifice, Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan announced that Rajesh’s final rites would be performed with full state honors. Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, the Chief Minister also pledged that the state government would complete the construction of Rajesh’s unfinished family home.
Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences, noting that Rajesh had left behind an eternal symbol of sacrifice and humanity. He stated that Rajesh surrendered his own life jacket to save another person, leaving behind an inspiration that will always be remembered. Rajesh is survived by his wife Safiya and two school-going sons, Arshan and Abhishek.
