Torrential downpours unleashed widespread devastation across the highland district of Idukki on Sunday evening, triggering a massive landslide that snuffed out two lives. The disaster struck the Kottakamboor locality of Vattavada along the Kadavari route, where an enormous portion of a hillside gave way near a residential structure. Heavy debris crashed down directly onto a shed, claiming the lives of two local residents identified as Balakrishnan and Chinnu. Both victims were engaged in cleaning and sorting harvested garlic inside the shed when the hillside collapsed above them.
Seeking Refuge from Rain Before the Hillside Gave Way
The swift change in weather across the hilly slopes left farmhands with practically no window to run to safety. Providing details of the sequence of events, Devikulam MLA A Raja stated that workers had been carrying out their routine chores in the agricultural fields earlier in the afternoon. When intense rain lashed the area without warning, they sought temporary cover inside a nearby shed to protect themselves from the downpour. Within mere moments, the hill slope directly behind the shed tore loose, sending tons of wet mud, boulders, and hillside debris crashing downward, completely burying the entire structure under the load.
Rescue Operations and Medical Care for the Injured
Drawn by alarming sounds and cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene immediately and launched a strenuous rescue effort to dig out those trapped beneath the rubble. While Balakrishnan's wife sustained injuries in the collapse, her life was successfully spared. Another individual caught in the debris suffered grave, life-threatening injuries. Emergency personnel swiftly transferred the critically injured survivor via ambulance to the Adimali Taluk Hospital, where medical teams continue to provide intensive treatment. The tragic mishap has cast a pall of grief and anxiety over the entire neighborhood.
Administrative Formalities and Post-Mortem Proceedings
Elaborating on the incident, MLA A Raja stated, "There were three people inside at the time; two of them were trapped under the mud, while one was rescued and admitted to hospital." The bodies of the two deceased laborers were initially transported to Munnar to initiate necessary procedures. Following the completion of statutory legal formalities by local authorities, the remains will be shifted to the Adimali Taluk Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Officials confirmed that procedural tasks, inquests, and autopsies are being expedited to assist the grieving families.
Three Bodies Retrieved After Flash Flooding in Chokkad River
Alongside the landslide catastrophe, swelling waterways inflicted severe loss of life in the region. Authorities confirmed on Sunday that the death toll from sudden flash floods in the Chokkad River climbed to three. Search and rescue personnel successfully retrieved the bodies of all three missing persons, comprising one woman and two men who had been swept away by the surging torrents. Rescue teams recovered the final missing body, that of an adult male, near the Antonikkad area. The twin tragedies have prompted authorities to put highland areas on high alert amid unpredictable weather conditions.
