In Thiruvananthapuram, T G Mohan Das has secured bail from the judiciary following a massive uproar over his deeply offensive and derogatory comments directed at female students who took part in demonstrations against alleged NEET paper leaks. Mohan Das, who routinely projects himself on social media platforms as a speaker sharing Hindutva and right-wing ideologies, had earlier been taken into custody by local police after his remarks went viral on a YouTube channel.
On Monday, the Additional Chief Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thiruvananthapuram, presided over by Judge Mithun Gopi GS, granted bail to Mohan Das. Police produced him before the court on the same day, during which his legal counsel moved an immediate bail petition. The magistrate heard arguments from both sides before delivering the order.
Court Acknowledges Bailable Nature of Charges
The Thiruvananthapuram cyber police, handling the ongoing investigation into the matter, informed the court that they had slapped additional charges against the accused. These included provisions related to outraging the modesty of women through any words, sounds, gestures, or objects, alongside charges of criminal intimidation involving severe threats.
The prosecution strongly pressed for the custody of the accused to facilitate further investigation. They expressed apprehension that given his influential background, Mohan Das might sway witnesses and tamper with vital evidence if released on bail. Conversely, the defense counsel highlighted his advanced age and existing health conditions, arguing that all the offenses invoked against Mohan Das were bailable in nature.
Conditions Imposed by the Judiciary
After evaluating the arguments presented by both legal teams, the court granted bail to Mohan Das while outlining specific compliance conditions. As part of the investigation protocol, the court directed Mohan Das to report before the investigating officer for three consecutive days. He was further instructed to make himself available whenever summoned by the police for questioning.
Additionally, the court strictly cautioned him against repeating any similar offenses while out on bail, warning that any breach could lead to legal consequences.
The entire legal proceeding was initiated following a formal complaint alleging that a video uploaded on Mohan Das’s YouTube channel, named 'Pathrika', was intended to disrupt public tranquility and foster an environment of fear and unrest among the citizenry.
In that video, Mohan Das had reportedly stated that student protests in Delhi could potentially lead to gang rapes, claiming further that no complaints would arise because participants supposedly liked rapes and that some girls actually enjoyed being raped. He had gone on to assert that even though some individuals might lose their lives or sustain permanent injuries, the situation would be brought under control within hours and bodies would be shifted to hospitals. These inflammatory remarks had triggered widespread condemnation, culminating in his police arrest.
