At least 16 elderly residents died after a fierce fire broke out at the El Edén nursing home in Chile, according to local authorities. The tragic incident occurred on Friday evening at the facility located roughly 640km or 400 miles south of the capital city of Santiago. Amid the raging flames, ten other individuals were successfully evacuated from the premises by emergency responders. Firefighters battled the blaze for hours, and the fire was finally extinguished by Saturday morning. Throughout Saturday, crews remained on site clearing away debris and removing collapsed corrugated metal roofing while police cordoned off the surrounding area for safety.
Investigation and Government Response
Jorge Granada, the prosecutor leading the legal inquiry into the disaster, stated that it remains unclear at this stage what originally triggered the blaze. In the wake of the tragedy, Chile's President José Antonio Kast announced that he has ordered a comprehensive review into the safety conditions and operational standards of nursing homes across the entire country. Emphasizing the need for accountability, President Kast noted that authorities will fully cooperate with the justice system to uncover the exact sequence of events, examine potential oversight failures, and evaluate what alerts were raised and how staff responded. He stressed that uncovering the absolute truth is essential to prevent such a catastrophe from recurring.
