Massive public gatherings marked the International Day of Yoga across various global destinations on Sunday. Established annually on June 21 since its inception in 2014, the global event focused on the central theme of 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' this year. Promoters and organizers highlighted how regular practice contributes to physical fitness, mental resilience, and sustainable wellness over a lifetime.
Enthusiastic Participation Across Asian Cities
In Tokyo, Japan, despite steady rainfall, more than 2,100 participants turned up at the Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple for an event organized by the Indian Embassy. Embracing the weather, the embassy promoted the session with the slogan "Yoga together, rain or shine!".
In Shanghai, China, approximately 400 people, including diplomats, academic professionals, yoga practitioners, and members of the Indian diaspora, gathered at the Bund Finance Centre. Highlighting the significance of the event, Consul General Pratik Mathur described yoga as India's enduring gift to humanity, noting its invaluable contribution to overall health, mental clarity, and active ageing.
Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, witnessed a massive gathering of over 1,100 people at an event arranged by the High Commission of India alongside the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre. YB Senator Puan Saraswathy Kandasami attended as the chief guest and delivered an inspiring speech focusing on how yoga helps build a healthy and productive nation.
In Singapore, hundreds of citizens, Indian diaspora members, and a Minister of State joined the celebrations. Dr Shilpak Ambule lauded Singapore's inclusive environment, stating that the nation’s dedication to multiculturalism and health has allowed yoga to be embraced with deep enthusiasm.
Overcoming Weather Anomalies in Europe and America
In the United States, New York City’s iconic Times Square became a melting pot of cultures as people of diverse nationalities spread out their mats to celebrate the day. Across the Atlantic, in London's Holland Park, India’s High Commissioner P Kumaran joined a massive gathering during extremely hot weather. Commenting on the rising global popularity of the practice, Kumaran expressed his happiness at seeing the steady expansion of yoga's reach.
Germany faced its own set of weather obstacles, but thunderstorms could not deter the participants in Berlin. Organized by the Indian Embassy in partnership with the Art of Living, over 500 yoga enthusiasts gathered near the Brandenburg Gate, continuing their practice with high spirits despite the storm.
In Moscow, Russia, Universitetskaya Square at Lomonosov Moscow State University hosted a grand demonstration. The Moscow City Government worked closely with the Jawaharlal Nehru Cultural Centre to bring hundreds of people together for the Common Yoga Protocol, led by yoga teacher Mr. Bhup Singh Thakur.
Gatherings Across Other Hemispheres
Australia saw a large assembly of practitioners at Canberra's Old Parliament House. Guided by Yoga Australia CEO Josh Pryor, the one-hour session was described by the Indian High Commission as a peaceful opportunity for mindfulness and a reminder that yoga serves as a holistic lifestyle that balances both mind and body.
The High Commission of India in New Zealand hosted a joint event on its premises alongside Heartfulness and the Art of Living Foundation NZ, drawing members of the local Kiwi, Indian, and other ethnic communities. Meanwhile, Finland marked the day in Helsinki at the Oodi Library opposite the Parliament House, with diplomats and local officials in attendance.
In Milan, Italy, a public session was held at the Arco della Pace, while Turkey saw over 250 participants, including Turkish citizens and diplomats, come together at India House in Ankara. In Barcelona, Spain, approximately 150 practitioners joined a session organized at Parc de Joan Miró in collaboration with the Indian Culture Centre and The Yoga Gallery.
Focus on Youth and Neighboring Nations
Saudi Arabia emphasized early wellness habits by involving young learners. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh hosted a session where nearly 100 school children and teachers practiced on their mats, highlighting the importance of building healthy habits from a young age.
In Bangladesh, the Indian High Commission in Dhaka gathered participants of all age groups, highlighting the relevance of yoga across different stages of life. In Nepal, the Pokhara Metropolitan City teamed up with the Indian Embassy to hold a mass demonstration at the Pokhara Rangasala stadium.
Canada held its main session on Saturday in Toronto, where around 800 participants, including government representatives, wellness organizations, and community leaders, gathered in front of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Similar celebratory sessions were organized by Indian missions in several other nations, including Slovenia, Romania, Indonesia, Oman, UAE, Nigeria, Denmark, Kenya, Scotland, Mozambique, Ireland, Sri Lanka, and Kazakhstan, all echoing the core theme of Yoga for Healthy Ageing.
