Live: Heavy rain alert issued for Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand; Delhi under yellow warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, September 25, 2026, projected a significant increase in precipitation across Uttar Pradesh during the upcoming 48 hours. The weather office has sounded a 'red alert' for numerous districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy precipitation generally, alongside exceptionally heavy falls in scattered areas. In response to the weather projections lasting until September 27, the state administration has directed local district authorities to remain highly vigilant. Residents are urged to stay indoors during periods of lightning and heavy downpours, avoid swimming or bathing in rivers and other water reservoirs, and remain extremely careful. According to the official weather update, this system developed from a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal that made landfall on the southern Odisha coast before travelling northwestward. It is expected to maintain its strength for the next 12 hours before slowly losing intensity and turning into a well-defined low-pressure system over the following 12 hours. This meteorology pattern is anticipated to boost rain spells throughout the state, triggering heavy to very heavy wet spells in eastern Uttar Pradesh on September 25 and 26, and in western Uttar Pradesh on September 26. Isolated spots might experience exceptionally heavy precipitation, according to forecasters. Forecasters warned that the torrential rain could result in sudden flash floods across specific catchments in the state. Furthermore, strong surface winds of 30 to 40 kmph, with gusts peaking near 50 kmph, are expected to accompany the wet spell, while isolated areas might see gusts blowing at 40 to 50 kmph, occasionally touching 60 kmph. Most parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and numerous areas of western Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive precipitation and thunderstorm activity.
