A shocking case of arson has surfaced in the Lamta police station area of Balaghat district, where the storage plant of a company laying pipelines for a government irrigation scheme was set on fire. The incident has put the spotlight on the security of infrastructure being built under government-backed schemes in rural Madhya Pradesh. The plant, located at Raghotola in Gram Panchayat Pratappur, held pipes and equipment worth crores of rupees, all of which was reduced to ashes. A complaint has been filed against BJP-linked Janpad Panchayat member Bhumeshwar Rajak, Pratappur Sarpanch Rajesh Sirsam, and half a dozen others in connection with the incident.
Extortion demand allegedly behind the fire
According to the police complaint, the plant had been facing a long-running demand for illegal extortion money. The same demand was reportedly made again on the day of the incident, and when it was not met, the accused allegedly targeted the plant. A day before the fire, some miscreants from the area allegedly assaulted the guard posted at the site, poured diesel over him, and then set the entire plant ablaze. The fire destroyed valuable pipes and several other essential materials stored there, with the loss estimated at more than Rs 9 crore.
Irrigation for 12,000 farmers across 55 villages at stake
The plant was part of the Rs 175 crore first lift water micro-irrigation scheme, which is designed to carry irrigation water to the fields of more than 12,000 farmers across 55 villages in the Lamta area of Balaghat. The project is currently in its final stage of completion. The company executing the work had set up its plant at Raghotola in Gram Panchayat Pratappur, where a large stock of pipes, machinery and other essential materials worth crores of rupees was stored. With the fire now damaging this stock, the progress of the scheme is likely to be affected, which could in turn hit the irrigation water supply farmers in the region were expecting.
Police investigate, local MLA inspects the site
Police swung into action as soon as the complaint was filed and have launched an investigation into the incident, taking some suspects into custody. After learning of the case, local MLA Madhu Bhagat and officials overseeing the irrigation project reached the spot and inspected the damage. MLA Madhu Bhagat has demanded strict action against those responsible. The arson has disrupted the irrigation water facility that farmers in the area were counting on, leaving many of them upset over the incident.
