Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has been officially declared as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha by-poll in Madhya Pradesh in 2026. A key member in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's council of ministers, Puri's nomination comes following the vacancy created when BJP leader L Murugan stepped down from the seat in October. The resignation of L Murugan from both the upper house of Parliament and his ministerial post has also triggered wider discussions around an impending cabinet reshuffle in the NDA central government.
By-Election Scheduled for November 12
The by-election to fill the legislative vacancy left by former Union minister L Murugan will be conducted on November 12. Prior to the formal declaration, Puri had emerged as a leading contender among the prospective names discussed by the Madhya Pradesh BJP leadership. The party's state core committee had scrutinized several profiles and forwarded a panel containing four to five recommended names to the central leadership, which finalized Puri's candidature through its central election committee.
Current Rajya Sabha Tenure Ending on November 25
Puri's existing legislative tenure in the Rajya Sabha representing Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to conclude on November 25. His continuity in the upper house had earlier come under speculation because the BJP did not re-nominate him from Uttar Pradesh during the recent round of biennial elections in that state. With his nomination from Madhya Pradesh now confirmed, the uncertainty regarding his parliamentary seat in the upper house has been effectively resolved.
From Career Diplomat to the Union Cabinet
Hardeep Singh Puri is an established figure across governance and national politics. He began his distinguished professional career as an officer in the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), handling critical diplomatic portfolios across several continents. Notably, he represented India at the United Nations, taking on vital multilateral negotiations. Following a successful diplomatic tenure, he stepped into public service and political administration, handling key executive responsibilities under the central administration led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Political Trajectory and Ministerial Portfolios in the BJP
Puri joined the BJP in 2014 to formally step into mainstream electoral politics. By September 2017, he was inducted into the Union government as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs. His responsibilities expanded substantially in July 2021 when he was elevated to the Union Cabinet as the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He continues to hold this portfolio, managing the strategic energy sector while preparing to renew his parliamentary mandate through Madhya Pradesh.
