A dramatic rescue unfolded in Dindori district headquarters of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday after a woman attempted to end her life by jumping off a major bridge over the Narmada river. Overwhelmed by marital disputes and severe emotional distress, the woman leaped into the strong river currents. Fortunately, the brave and immediate intervention of local bystanders prevented a tragic loss of life, as young men present nearby risked their lives to pull her out of the deep waters safely.
Distressed Call Before the Sudden Leap
Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that the woman, aged around 28 to 30 years, arrived at the bridge crying uncontrollably. She stood on the bridge for a considerable time in deep distress. She then requested a mobile phone from a passerby to call her family members. Seconds after finishing the phone conversation, she climbed over the bridge railing and jumped into the flowing Narmada river, leaving onlookers in total shock as people began shouting for emergency help.
Rescued 100 Meters Downstream in Fast Currents
The swift current of the Narmada river swept the woman nearly 100 meters away from the bridge, where she began sinking into deeper water. Yogesh Kumar Panchbhai and his companions, who were returning from their daily Shakha, witnessed the woman leaping into the water. Recognizing the life-threatening danger, Yogesh Kumar and his friends immediately jumped into the turbulent river without hesitation. Battling the strong water flow, they reached the exhausted woman and pulled her safely to the bank.
Family Disputes and Marital Stress Identified as Cause
An eyewitness named Gulab Bai mentioned that the woman appeared extremely disturbed and had been crying continuously before the incident. A local youth who had come to take a bath in the river identified her as a resident of Kukarramath village. She is a mother of two young children and had left her home a day prior following persistent domestic conflicts at her in-laws' house. The prolonged mental pressure led her to take this extreme step.
Police Informed as Relatives Arrive at the Scene
Following her successful rescue, information about the incident was promptly reported to the Dindori Kotwali police station. Her relatives were contacted and soon arrived at the site. After receiving preliminary care and counseling, the woman was handed over to her family members, who took her back home. Local residents praised the fearless efforts of Yogesh Kumar and his team for their timely action.
