Bulldozers flatten over 100 homes on prime government land in Agar Malwa, then political sit-in halts the demolition

Over 100 houses and huts were razed on about 25 bigha of government land in Agar Malwa along the Ujjain-Jhalawar highway, but the demolition drive was halted in the evening after Congress and BJP leaders arrived at the protest site in Bada Talab.

A demolition drive to clear encroachments on government land in Agar Malwa ran through an entire day, only for a political standoff to bring it to a halt by evening. Officials backed by a heavy police contingent moved in along the Ujjain-Jhalawar national highway near the Agar bus stand, reclaiming roughly 25 bigha of prime state-owned land.

Joint administration-police team moves in at dawn

A combined team of administration officials and police reached the site early in the morning. Bulldozers worked through the day, bringing down more than 100 makeshift houses and huts. Around 150 police personnel were deployed to maintain order in the area, while nearly 100 administration officials and staff stayed on the ground to oversee the drive. The scale of the deployment underlines how seriously the district administration treated the exercise.

Officials insist the drive followed the rules

Authorities maintain that the entire action was carried out strictly as per procedure. According to them, residents had already been informed through public announcements urging them to vacate the land before the bulldozers arrived. Affected families, however, reject this claim outright. They allege they were not given adequate time to vacate their homes and that the action against them was one-sided. Several residents at the spot also claimed they hold valid land leases and that their houses were being built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana.

A protest by Sarv Hindu Samaj set the stage a day earlier

Notably, just a day before this bulldozer action, the Sarv Hindu Samaj had demanded the removal of the same encroachment, holding a protest and blocking the highway to press its demand. The administration's swift response is now being viewed as a direct outcome of that pressure, coming barely a day after the organisation's demonstration.

Political clash erupts as the drive reaches Bada Talab

The day-long operation took a political turn by evening. As the administration's team reached the Bada Talab area to clear encroachments there, residents began protesting on the spot. Congress district president Vijaylakshmi Tanwar arrived and sat on a dharna in protest. Soon after, BJP district president Om Malviya also reached the site. Following a long round of talks between the two leaders and administrative officials, the demolition drive was called off for the time being.

A viral video amid the uproar

Amid the chaos, a video and a set of photographs have been circulating widely on social media. They show a distressed woman holding the feet of BJP district president Om Malviya, pleading with him to save her home. The video has added an emotional edge to an already charged situation. The administration, though, continues to insist that the entire operation is being carried out within the bounds of the law.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Such anti-encroachment drives on government land are picking up pace in several states, making it more important than ever for people living under schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to keep their land papers and leases in order.
  • In Agar Malwa: Families in the Bada Talab area whose homes were slated for demolition have a temporary reprieve now that leaders' intervention has paused the action, though the threat of eviction still looms over them.
