A heated dispute between two groups during a Ganesh idol immersion procession at the Agar Malwa district headquarters quickly escalated into physical violence. What began as a minor disagreement over the positioning of tableaux and the operation of DJ systems soon turned into a full-scale scuffle, leaving several individuals with minor injuries. In the wake of the altercation, large crowds from both factions gathered at the Kotwali police station, forcing authorities to step in and deploy crowd-control measures so that the immersion could safely conclude late into the night. Prior to this incident, separate accidents during Ganesh idol immersions across Madhya Pradesh had resulted in four deaths, with search operations still underway for five missing individuals.
How the Dispute Erupted During the Procession
The incident unfolded on the main road near the Housing Board Colony in Agar, where multiple Ganesh immersion processions were passing simultaneously. An argument broke out between two factions concerning the placement and movement order of their tableaux and DJ setups, specifically centered on which procession group should move forward first. This verbal confrontation rapidly spiraled out of control into a physical fight, with members of both sides clashing directly on the street and sustaining minor injuries in the process.
Renewed Tensions Inside the Police Station
Following the street brawl, substantial crowds from both groups flocked to the Kotwali police station to register formal complaints against each other. According to reports, members of one faction even brought a Ganesh idol directly inside the police station premises. The situation threatened to boil over when police brought a member of the opposing group into the station, triggering another round of pushing, shoving, and physical scuffles right inside the station building itself.
Police Intervention Restores Order
Recognizing the rapidly deteriorating situation, senior police officials intervened immediately, using a mild lathi charge to disperse and control the unruly crowd. Additional Superintendent of Police Ravindra Kumar Boyat and other senior officers engaged directly with both factions, mediating discussions to restore calm. Once normalcy was established late at night, the immersion procession resumed under tight supervision, allowing the Ganesh idol immersion to be completed successfully without any further untoward incidents.
Action to Be Taken Based on Formal Complaints
Police authorities confirmed that appropriate legal action is being pursued based on the written complaints submitted by both parties. According to ASP Boyat, the initial altercation stemmed strictly from a disagreement over the sequence of the procession. Although law enforcement successfully brought the situation under control, an ongoing investigation into the entire episode remains active. This event underscores the critical importance of coordinated planning and disciplined management during large-scale religious festivals to prevent localized flare-ups.
