A tragic workplace incident occurred late Saturday night on Dewas Road in Ujjain, claiming the lives of four workers inside Hotel Shri Ganga. The employees had descended into an underground waste chamber located on the right side of the hotel building to conduct clearance operations. Overcome by a dangerous concentration of toxic gases, profound depth, and severely slick surfaces inside the confined pit, the men lost consciousness within minutes. Attempts by fellow colleagues to intervene also resulted in toxic inhalation injuries, leaving several hospitalized alongside an injured emergency responder.
Hazardous Accumulation of Fumes in Dairy and Confectionery Pit
The underground chamber on the premises was specifically engineered to intercept runoff from the hotel's confectionery, bakery, and dairy operations. Wastes consisting of greasy residues, sugary syrups, cooking oils, and stagnant wash water routinely pass through this enclosure before reaching public drainage channels. When blockages occur, biological decomposition within unventilated compartments generates deadly chemical vapor. Around 10:30 PM, the crew entered the deep pit to dislodge accumulated sludge, but the suffocating atmosphere immediately incapacitated them, preventing any self-evacuation.
Alerted to the emergency, other hotel workers attempted a hasty extraction of their colleagues. However, the noxious fumes rapidly affected two additional workers who entered the opening, rendering them seriously ill. Both men had to be extracted and transported to the hospital for urgent medical stabilization.
Ninety-Minute Cutting Operation Led by Police
Upon receiving the distress call, emergency response units, medical teams, and Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma rushed to the commercial establishment. Traditional recovery methods proved futile because the entry opening was too restricted and hazardous. Under the direct supervision of Superintendent Pradeep Sharma, the rescue squad deployed electric industrial cutters to slice through the solid structure of the waste chamber.
Following an intense ninety-minute rescue effort, all four trapped men were successfully retrieved from the chamber. Police officers on the scene administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to revive them before transferring the victims to the hospital, where medical staff confirmed they had succumbed to asphyxiation. A police sub-inspector also sustained injuries during the hazardous recovery operation.
Identities of the Deceased Workers
Authorities subsequently confirmed the personal details of all four deceased workers, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh and neighboring Rajasthan
- Kamlesh: Son of Sohanlal, resident of Balmiki Nagar, Ujjain
- Nitin: Son of Tarachand, resident of Balmiki Nagar, Ujjain
- Vahid: Resident of Somwariya, Ujjain
- Manoj Meena: Resident of Jhalawar, Rajasthan
Formal Inquiry Launched into Safety Violations
Law enforcement authorities have officially registered a case and initiated a comprehensive investigation into the fatalities. Investigators are examining whether Hotel Shri Ganga violated mandatory industrial safety protocols by deploying personnel into an unventilated confined space without respiratory gear, protective suits, gas monitoring instruments, or emergency retrieval harnesses. Forensic assessments will determine the exact chemical composition of the accumulated gases as authorities prepare potential accountability proceedings against the establishment.
