Three people had a narrow escape in Madhya Pradesh's Dindori district after their car was swept into a flooded river while they were trying to cross it during heavy rain. The incident took place in the Shahpura area, where continuous downpour has pushed local rivers and streams well past their normal levels.
How the car got swept away
The Kasa river, which flows along the Bastara road in Shahpura, saw its water level rise suddenly because of the relentless rain, sending a strong sheet of water flowing right over the bridge. The current was aggressive enough to make crossing risky, but a car driver still attempted to cross the flooded river. The moment the car reached the middle of the bridge, it lost control against the force of the water, much like a house of cards, and was swept into the fast-moving current within moments.
Three men swim to safety
As the car began drifting in the swollen river, the three occupants inside found themselves staring at a life-threatening situation, trapped inside with rushing water all around. Instead of panicking, the trio acted quickly, prying open the windows and doors and jumping out just before the car could go completely under. Since all three knew how to swim, they fought against the strong current and pushed their way toward the bank. After a tough struggle, they managed to reach the shore safely, narrowly avoiding what could have turned into a major tragedy.
Car stuck against a rock as officials rush to the spot
News of the incident drew a large crowd of villagers from the surrounding area to the site. The car, after being carried some distance by the current, got lodged against a large rock in the middle of the river. Local administration and police teams reached the location soon after being informed. There was no loss of life in the entire episode, which came as a huge relief, though the incident has put the local administration on alert.
Officials warn against crossing flooded rivers
With such acts of carelessness surfacing right at the start of the monsoon season, the district administration has issued a strong appeal to the residents of Dindori. Officials have said that people should avoid attempting to cross swollen rivers, drains or low-lying causeways under any circumstances during heavy rain, stressing that even a single moment of carelessness can turn fatal.
