A sudden tragedy unfolded in central Mumbai near the renowned Lalbaugcha Raja pandal on Thursday night when an elderly man collapsed while resting in the bustling vicinity. Bystanders and authorities immediately coordinated emergency medical transportation to a nearby healthcare center, but attending doctors determined that he had already passed away before arrival. The sprawling pandal draws massive crowds of devotees continuously through the 12-day Ganeshotsav festivities, and officials are currently examining the medical reasons behind his sudden demise.
Man Collapses Near Hanuman Temple in Lalbaug
According to municipal officials citing inputs registered at the Kalachowki police station, the deceased was identified as 68-year-old Vijay Anekar, a local neighborhood resident. The incident occurred late on Thursday night when Anekar was seated close to the Hanuman temple situated adjacent to the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal compound. Without warning, he lost consciousness and slumped to the ground, prompting immediate intervention from those stationed in the heavily patrolled religious corridor.
Declared Dead on Arrival at Global Hospital
First responders quickly transported Anekar to Global Hospital in Parel. Upon clinical assessment, medical professionals formally declared him brought dead. Healthcare staff noted that the precise cause of death could not be ascertained right away. This marks the second fatality reported in the Lalbaug area during the current festive run. Earlier on September 17, a 25-year-old visitor from Pune, Jaideep Meghraj Nemade, also lost his life following a medical emergency at the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati pandal.

Meanwhile, Ganesh idol immersion proceedings have officially commenced across Mumbai and wider Maharashtra, backed by comprehensive municipal and security planning. To guarantee that large-scale immersion processions remain peaceful and orderly, over 24,000 police personnel have been deployed throughout Mumbai. Specialized traffic advisories and vehicular diversions have also been brought into force by traffic management authorities to minimize public inconvenience. Outside Mumbai, Nagpur has reinforced its law-and-order apparatus with the deputation of 8,500 police officers and ground personnel.
