In the aftermath of a violent incident at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, Maharashtra, Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre was taken into police custody for his alleged role in assaulting doctors and nurses. Shortly after his arrest, Mhatre reported a deterioration in his health, which necessitated his transfer to the Thane Civil Hospital for medical attention. According to Suhas Hemade, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in Dombivli, the accused was moved to the hospital due to health-related concerns. Police officials stated that the next phase of legal proceedings will only resume once they receive the medical report and formal clearance from the attending doctors.
Doctors Launch Strike in Protest
According to police records, Ramesh Mhatre was arrested under Sections 132 and 121(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a formal complaint filed at the Vishnunagar Police Station. A total of four individuals have been arrested in connection with this case so far. Meanwhile, the medical staff at the hospital have continued their strike to protest the violence. Doctors have voiced their frustrations, alleging a complete breakdown of law and order within hospital premises. Various medical organizations have urged the state government to intervene immediately and have demanded the apprehension of everyone involved in the assault.
Dispute Over Treatment of a Pregnant Woman
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Atul Zende confirmed that an FIR was registered at the Vishnunagar Police Station immediately following the incident. He explained that three of the suspects were taken into custody on the very night the FIR was filed. They were later produced before a court, which remanded them to two days of police custody. With the subsequent arrest of the fourth accused, Ramesh Mhatre, investigators are proceeding with the case in accordance with the law. ACP Suhas Hemade noted that the conflict originated during the treatment of a pregnant patient, as the individuals accompanying her engaged in a heated altercation with the hospital staff.
Verbal Abuse and Threats Reported
Investigations reveal that the suspects did not stop at physical assault, but also directed verbal abuse toward the on-duty male doctor, the female doctor, and the nursing staff. The victimized doctors also reported that they were subjected to threats. ACP Hemade confirmed that a case has been registered based on the victim's complaint. The police have assured that all legal protocols will be strictly followed to ensure that the accused face appropriate consequences for their actions. Authorities remain focused on conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
