A deadly road accident on the Thane-Bhiwandi highway near Mumbai has claimed the life of a woman after her scooter hit a deep pothole, throwing her into the path of a moving truck. The couple was on their way to look at a new apartment when the tragedy struck, leaving the husband injured and sparking local outrage over hazardous road conditions.
The incident occurred near Rahanal village along the Thane-Bhiwandi road. Forty-six-year-old Sunita Akshaylal Pal was riding on a scooter with her husband, Akshaylal Pal. As the vehicle hit an unexpected road depression, the driver lost balance, causing both of them to fall onto the asphalt. At that exact moment, a truck approaching from behind ran over Sunita, resulting in her instant death at the scene. Her husband sustained injuries in the mishap and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
Couple Was Out to Inspect a New Flat
Sunita and Akshaylal were travelling from Thane towards the Anjur Pata area in Bhiwandi with the intention of inspecting a flat. Following the fatal incident, the Narpoli police shifted the body to the Bhiwandi sub-district hospital for a post-mortem examination and initiated a formal investigation into the matter. Enraged by the recurring danger, local residents have strongly demanded immediate repairs to fill these lethal potholes on the road, alongside financial compensation for the grieving family.
Orange Alert Issued for Heavy Rains in Mumbai
Meanwhile, the weather department has issued an orange alert for heavy downpours in Mumbai. The city faces a strong possibility of intense rainfall over the next few hours. According to meteorological predictions, certain pockets are expected to experience heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. An alert has specifically been sounded for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and the Ghat regions of Pune, with citizens advised to exercise caution. Authorities note that when rainwater accumulates and submerges roadways, hidden potholes become invisible to motorists, significantly escalating the risk of fatal two-wheeler accidents.
Similar Incident Reported Earlier in Gujarat
A parallel tragic mishap occurred recently in Gujarat. In Vadodara, three young women were commuting on a single scooter when the two-wheeler skidded on a wet road surface. One of the women fell directly into the path of an oncoming road roller coming from behind, leading to her spot death. Although her two companions survived with minor injuries, the chilling accident was caught entirely on CCTV footage.
