A deadly armed raid shattered the early morning calm in a remote corner of Manipur's Tamenglong district on Sunday. Unidentified gunmen descended on Tollen Kuki village and unleashed an indiscriminate barrage of gunfire on a residential household. The attack claimed the life of a woman identified as Lhingngai and left her husband and infant son with severe gunshot injuries. The violence unfolded at around 4 am in an isolated settlement located near NH-37, the vital highway connecting Imphal with Jiribam.
Household Targeted as Gunfire Rips Through Remote Village
The assailants launched an indiscriminate volley across the village settlement before directing their fire at the family's residence. Lhingngai was fatally struck inside her home. Her husband also sustained gunshot wounds in the assault, while their infant son was struck in the arm. A second bullet remained lodged in the infant's buttocks, compounding the gravity of his physical trauma. In the chaotic moments directly following the shooting, three other children belonging to the couple were reported missing, though local residents managed to locate and secure them shortly afterward.
Suspicions Pointed at Armed Outfits
Local residents alleged that cadres affiliated with the NSCN-IM alongside Naga Village Guards carried out the dawn raid. However, these claims have not been officially substantiated, and no armed group had claimed responsibility for the bloodshed at the time of reporting. Security personnel are continuing inquiries to ascertain the identities and motives of the perpetrators behind the attack.
Significance of September 13 and Historical Tensions
The violent incident coincided with September 13, a date observed annually by the Kuki community as Sahnit Ni, or Kuki Black Day. This solemn remembrance honors victims of the devastating Kuki-Naga ethnic clashes that swept the region during the 1990s. The date also marks the anniversary of the 1993 Joupi massacre, an episode in which scores of Kuki civilians were killed across Tamenglong and the erstwhile Senapati district. Kuki civil bodies have long attributed those historic killings to the NSCN-IM.
Logistical Hurdles in Western Tamenglong
Tollen, which is also referred to as Tolen, sits within the rugged Tousem sub-division of western Tamenglong. The settlement remains exceptionally difficult to reach due to its isolation, harsh terrain, and dilapidated road infrastructure. These physical barriers create acute logistical difficulties for emergency responders attempting medical evacuations and prompt treatment for critically wounded victims.
This fresh bloodshed has heightened anxiety throughout vulnerable pockets of Tamenglong. Intermittent exchanges of fire and localized clashes have repeatedly surfaced along the Imphal-Tamenglong corridor, underscoring fragile peace amid enduring friction between Kuki-Zo and Naga groups.
