Manipur's government will only take up compensation claims for displaced residents' lost household belongings once resettlement and rehabilitation work is finished, the state's Home Minister told legislators on Monday. The assurance came with no fixed timeline attached, tying any financial relief to the pace of stabilisation efforts already underway.
Question raised in the Assembly
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam was answering a question from Congress legislator Kangujam Ranjit Singh, who asked what the state administration planned to do for internally displaced persons who had lost movable property during the ongoing unrest. Konthoujam told the Assembly that such compensation would be considered only after IDPs had been fully resettled and rehabilitated.
No payouts made so far
The minister confirmed that not a single payment had been made so far as compensation for movable assets lost by displaced families. He linked the pace of resettlement itself to the broader security situation, saying rehabilitation efforts would move toward completion once law and order across the state improves.
No fixed timeline yet
Pressed further with a supplementary question on whether the government had set a deadline for paying out compensation, Konthoujam said no such timeframe exists at present. He said the administration would examine the compensation question only after the resettlement and rehabilitation process for displaced people had run its course.
Government reiterates commitment
Konthoujam closed his reply by reaffirming that the state government remains committed to the welfare and rehabilitation of citizens uprooted by the crisis, even as he stopped short of giving IDPs any concrete date for financial relief. He indicated that rehabilitation remains the government's immediate priority.
