Escalating Demands Ahead of the Census
The consultative gathering coincides with intensifying public demands across the state for NRC updation prior to the upcoming Census exercise. Protests over the issue were witnessed earlier this month in Kakching district, where residents from Wabagai, Hiyanglam, and adjacent localities organised a massive torchlight procession. Demonstrators marched for nearly three kilometres shouting slogans such as "No NRC, No Census." The rally escalated into clashes when some participants reportedly pelted stones at security forces, prompting the police to deploy tear gas to clear the gathering. The all-party consultations are seen as a strategic push by the administration to address these growing public concerns through political consensus.
