Global financial and foreign exchange markets are closely watching an upcoming barrage of key macroeconomic data releases alongside a packed schedule of central bank speeches. The US Dollar has advanced for the fourth consecutive week, touching levels not seen since April 2025. Steady market expectations regarding further policy tightening by the Federal Reserve, coupled with persistent geopolitical tensions and rising crude oil prices, have underpinned the greenback's sustained upward momentum across major currency pairs.
Japanese Yen Faces Pressure Amid Heavy Domestic Data Pipeline
The USD/JPY currency pair marked its fourth consecutive week of gains, although trading activity has maintained a somewhat sideways pattern since the start of the month. Data released on Friday confirmed that Japan's household spending dropped for the ninth straight month, exerting downward pressure on the Japanese Yen and keeping USD/JPY hovering near the 158.00 mark. Meanwhile, an overnight pullback in US government bond yields countered the hawkish Federal Reserve stance and geopolitical uncertainties, preventing sharper downside swings in the currency pair.
Japan's economic calendar will see substantial activity in the coming days. Bank lending figures and producer prices are scheduled for release on October 13. These will be followed on October 15 by key updates, including machinery orders, weekly foreign bond investment reports, capacity utilisation statistics, and the final readings for industrial production, all of which will provide deeper insight into the strength of the Japanese economy.
Aussie Rebounds While Gold Slips Below Key Threshold
In Asian trading on Friday, AUD/USD gained positive traction, extending its rebound from weekly lows and making a push toward the 0.7000 level. The retreat in US Treasury yields kept the US Dollar off its 18-month high, providing breathing room for the Australian Dollar. Furthermore, ongoing expectations of a hawkish policy path from the Reserve Bank of Australia helped sustain buyer interest in the major pair.
Conversely, gold surrendered recent gains after an initial attempt to test weekly highs, retreating back below the $4,200 per troy ounce threshold on Friday. Strong upward momentum in the US Dollar, combined with elevated US Treasury yields across various maturities, continues to place a ceiling on the precious metal's upside momentum as market participants reassess their near-term exposure.
