Indian benchmark equity indices opened with sharp losses on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, driven by widespread selling pressure across major sectoral stocks. Both leading market barometers started the third trading session of the week in negative territory, following a weak closing session on Tuesday. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped by 472.96 points, or 0.61 percent, to open at 76,471.32. Simultaneously, the broader NSE Nifty 50 index lost 197.80 points, representing a decline of 0.82 percent, to begin trading at 23,858.00.
Subdued Opening Across Benchmark Indices
The market opened on a clearly bearish note on Wednesday morning, reflecting sustained negative sentiment from the previous session. Investors faced broad-based profit booking and defensive positioning right from the opening bell. Out of the 30 constituent companies on the BSE Sensex, all 30 opened in the red zone with noticeable declines. The market breadth was similarly negative on the NSE Nifty 50, where 48 out of 50 component stocks opened with losses, leaving only 2 companies managing to trade in green territory during early transactions.
IndiGo Leads Decliners While Trent Holds Relatively Firm

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Tata Group retail enterprise Trent recorded the mildest decline among Sensex constituents, opening down by a minor 0.04 percent. This contrast highlighted the varying degrees of pressure felt across aviation and retail sectors during the opening minutes of trading.
