Indian equity benchmarks recorded a divergent trend on Friday, November 6, as large-cap indices Sensex and Nifty pushed higher while broader market space suffered sharp selling pressure. Investors indulged in aggressive profit-booking across midcap and smallcap segments following Thursday's strong rally. While buying interest in technology and private banking counters helped keep headline indices in positive territory, weakness in real estate, metal, and energy equities constrained overall market momentum.
Benchmark Movements and Volatility Surge
During morning trade at 11:22 AM, the 30-share BSE Sensex advanced 400 points or 0.50 percent to reach 79,710, while the NSE Nifty 50 rose 58 points or 0.24 percent to quote at 24,595. Despite these benchmark gains, market volatility flared up significantly. The volatility index India VIX spiked 9.5 percent to 17.06, underscoring heightened uncertainty among traders. Sectoral trends remained mixed, with consumer durables and private bank stocks witnessing active buying, whereas realty, metal, energy, and media indices experienced sustained downward pressure.
Broader Market Sell-Off Hits Midcaps and Smallcaps
The broader market indices faced a steep decline after the previous session's rally. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index plunged 1.88 percent, and the Nifty Midcap 150 index dropped 1.45 percent, driven by widespread liquidation. Among major laggards, PI Industries fell 2.17 percent to Rs 1,731.60. Stocks of Motilal Oswal Financial Services, Solar Industries India, and Godrej Properties all slid by more than 2 percent. Similarly, Yes Bank dropped 2.16 percent to trade at Rs 15.89, while New India Assurance shed 2.10 percent to reach Rs 155.21. Supreme Industries saw the sharpest hit, tumbling over 5 percent to touch its 52-week low of Rs 3,112.
IT Index Rallies Alongside Key Midcap Gainers
In contrast to the broader sell-off, the Nifty IT index gained over 1 percent, emerging as a major market pillar. Strong buying in heavyweights such as TCS, HCL Tech, and Mphasis drove the sector's gains. Within the Nifty Midcap 150 index, Mphasis was the top gainer, surging 4.55 percent to Rs 2,624.10. Other notable midcap performers included NHPC, which climbed 2.42 percent, United Breweries with a 2.28 percent gain, Kalyan Jewellers advancing 1.57 percent, and Persistent pushing up by 1.54 percent.
