The Indian Rupee has managed to secure additional gains on the back of a continued downward trend in international crude oil prices. Given that India fulfills roughly 85 percent of its total energy requirements through imports, a notable contraction in oil quotes directly curtails foreign capital outflows, thereby bolstering the attractiveness and stability of the domestic currency.
Global Developments and Energy Market Dynamics
United States President Donald Trump confirmed that discussions with Iran regarding a potential diplomatic agreement are ongoing and that reaching a deal remains entirely possible. Trump explained that he decided to halt military strikes against Iran specifically to pave the way for diplomacy, though he maintained that the option to expand military aggression stays open should talks ultimately break down.
While this temporary pause in direct hostilities between the US and Iran triggered a sharp correction in oil prices, market participants note that global energy supply chains have not fully normalized, primarily because the critical Strait of Hormuz remains closed. In early trading, the MCX Crude Oil contract expiring on August 19 traded 1.4 percent lower at around Rs. 7,848, touching its lowest level in a week.
Economic Growth Projections and Policy Outlook
On the macroeconomic front, latest poll data indicates that India's Gross Domestic Product growth is projected to moderate to 6.6 percent year-on-year for the fiscal year ending March 2027, cooling down from 7.7 percent recorded in FY2025-26. Growth is subsequently anticipated to edge upward to 6.8 percent in FY2027-28, with subdued private investment and elevated oil costs cited as key headwinds constraining broader economic momentum.
Meanwhile, according to the CME FedWatch tool, market participants are pricing in a 62 percent probability that the US Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady within the 3.50 to 3.75 percent range during its upcoming policy meeting. For the Indian currency, the primary domestic catalyst ahead will be the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy announcement scheduled for next week.
Technical Outlook and Currency Drivers
In currency trading, USD/INR hovered lower at around 95.65, holding inside a corrective phase following recent advances as it slipped just beneath the 20-day exponential moving average positioned at 95.93. The loss of this short-term moving average as immediate resistance signals that upward momentum is tapering off, while the Relative Strength Index reading of 50.6 near neutral territory points toward consolidation.
On the upside, the 20-day EMA at 95.9278 acts as the initial barrier that bulls must reclaim to re-establish a constructive trend and target a retest of all-time highs near 97.10. On the downside, the psychological 95.00 mark serves as the primary support zone.
The Indian Rupee remains exceptionally sensitive to external variables, including international crude oil quotations, the strength of the US Dollar, and foreign institutional inflows. Active intervention by the Reserve Bank of India in foreign exchange markets, alongside its domestic interest rate adjustments aimed at keeping inflation aligned with its 4 percent target, continues to play a vital role in influencing exchange rate stability.
