Sensex Dip Hits Corporate Giants Hard as TCS Takes Biggest Blow While LIC Gains Value

A weekly market sell-off wiped out over Rs 1.01 lakh crore from five of India's top 10 companies, led by steep losses in TCS and Reliance, while LIC emerged as the biggest gainer.

Indian equity benchmarks faced persistent selling pressure during the past trading week, sparking a significant realignment in the market capitalization of the nation's top corporate giants. Both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty indices closed in the red as profit booking weighed on investor sentiment. The market slump hit half of the top ten most valued companies hard, wiping out over one lakh crore rupees from their combined market capitalization. However, defying the broader weak trend, the remaining five corporate leaders registered noticeable gains in their valuation.

TCS and Reliance Lead the Decliners List

Amid widespread market profit-booking, five of the top ten Sensex companies saw their cumulative market value erode by Rs 1,01,982.65 crore. Information technology major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) suffered the steepest loss during the week. The market capitalization of TCS tanked by Rs 34,263.28 crore, dragging its total valuation down to Rs 8,53,506.85 crore. Oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries also witnessed substantial erosion, losing Rs 31,869.13 crore in market capitalization to stand at Rs 17,70,056.06 crore.

Banking sector heavyweights similarly bore the brunt of the market decline. State-run lender State Bank of India (SBI) recorded a sharp decline of Rs 25,891.88 crore in its valuation, bringing its market cap down to Rs 9,85,829.96 crore. Private sector lending giant HDFC Bank saw its valuation decline by Rs 7,165.37 crore to settle at Rs 11,20,802.10 crore. ICICI Bank also recorded a contraction in market capitalization, shedding Rs 2,792.65 crore to finish at Rs 10,17,577.98 crore.

LIC and Bharti Airtel Secure Substantial Gains

In contrast to the declining trend among IT and banking stocks, five prominent firms managed to add Rs 55,149.45 crore to their aggregate market valuation. State-owned insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) emerged as the top performer of the week, boosting its market capitalization by Rs 26,438.49 crore to reach Rs 5,23,330.31 crore. Telecom operator Bharti Airtel also posted strong gains, expanding its market cap by Rs 20,592.13 crore to reach Rs 12,43,016.11 crore.

Non-banking financial entity Bajaj Finance advanced during the week, with its valuation rising by Rs 3,548.79 crore to touch Rs 6,77,197.34 crore. Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) registered an increase of Rs 2,490.66 crore in market cap, taking its total to Rs 5,58,973.11 crore. Consumer goods giant Hindustan Unilever (HUL) also added Rs 2,079.38 crore to close with a market capitalization of Rs 4,90,888.35 crore.

Weekly Performance of Benchmark Indices

The broader market weakness was clearly visible in the performance of key stock indices throughout the session. The 30-share BSE Sensex declined by 489.92 points or 0.62 percent over the week. Similarly, the broader 50-share NSE Nifty slipped by 204.65 points or 0.83 percent. Market analysts pointed to heavy selling in technology and financial counters as the primary trigger behind the market cap contraction across leading corporate names.
