Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement praising the coordinated resistance that prevented a catastrophic tragedy aboard a Flydubai passenger aircraft. The exceptional valor displayed by the Indian pilot, Captain Smit, has drawn global admiration from leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Crown Prince of Dubai. In its official reaction, the Israeli diplomatic establishment highlighted the collective stance taken by Indian, Israeli, and Emirati nationals against extremist violence, describing this mutual bond as the true future of the Middle East and the wider world.
United Front Against Extremism
Recounting the terrifying ordeal on the route between Dubai and Tel Aviv, the Israeli foreign ministry wrote on X that an extremist attacker had plotted to crash the aircraft and kill everyone on board. The official assessment noted that the assailant was met with resolute resistance from courageous Israeli travelers alongside the steadfast defense mounted by the Indian captain and the UAE flight crew. According to the diplomatic post, when Israelis, Emiratis, and Indians unite against terror, they form the cornerstone of regional stability and global cooperation.
The Critical Sequence at 34,000 Feet
The grave incident took place on September 30 while the passenger jet was cruising at an altitude of approximately 34,000 feet. Details regarding the cockpit struggle were disclosed by Captain Smit during a briefing with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. The captain recounted how the co-pilot, Hamam Al-Hamami, stood up under the pretext of conducting prayers. After obtaining permission from the captain to step aside for his prayers, Al-Hamami waited until Captain Smit resumed looking straight ahead to operate the flight before launching a vicious assault from behind. Within seconds, the co-pilot struck Captain Smit between 4 and 5 times using a cockpit crash axe.
Captain Smit Unlocks Cockpit Under Severe Duress
The brutal blows left Captain Smit nearly blind from head injuries and profuse bleeding. Despite fading consciousness, he managed an initial attempt to unlatch the cockpit entrance, only for Al-Hamami to slam it shut before anyone could intervene. Slumped on the cockpit floor while hearing panicked shouts from the passenger cabin, Captain Smit realized that 174 lives hung in the balance. Summoning his remaining physical strength, the injured commander successfully unlatched the secured entrance once more.
Subduing the Attacker and Diverting to Saudi Arabia
As the barrier opened, three Israeli passengers rushed into the cockpit, including a plumber. The turbulent forces inside were violent enough that the plumber initially struggled to keep his footing. Recovering quickly, he seized the flight control knob and pulled back firmly to arrest the plane's steep dive and bring the nose up. Simultaneously, the other two passengers tackled and subdued the hostile co-pilot. During the violent altercation, two off-duty pilots who were traveling aboard to operate subsequent flight segments stepped into the cockpit to assume full flight controls.
The crash axe was seized from the attacker and his hands were bound securely, while first aid was administered to stem the bleeding of the wounded Indian captain. The relief flight commander then informed the cabin over the public address system that everyone should fasten their seatbelts, announcing an immediate diversion to Saudi Arabia instead of Tel Aviv. Passengers erupted into applause and relieved sighs as the aircraft was safely stabilized and guided toward its unscheduled landing.
