A severe mid-air security crisis unfolded inside the cockpit of a commercial passenger jet when a co-pilot launched a violent attack on the captain using an emergency crash axe in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft. Operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Israel, the Flydubai flight was carrying more than 170 people when the terrifying struggle broke out approximately two and a half hours into the journey. The altercation sent the aircraft into a terrifying plunge of roughly 17,000ft (5,200m) before quick-thinking passengers and relief crew members managed to overpower the assailant, preventing a catastrophic crash and steering the jet to safety.
Cockpit Chaos and Sudden Altitude Loss
About two and a half hours after departing Dubai International Airport, the routine flight took a perilous turn. Inside the flight deck, the co-pilot armed himself with a crash axe, an emergency tool standardly stored inside the cockpit for survival situations, and assaulted the captain. The apparent goal was to incapacitate the pilot and assume command of the airliner. During the initial moments of the violent struggle, the aircraft lost level flight and began to descend steeply through the sky.
In response to the extreme cockpit emergency, the airliner broadcast squawk 7700, the universal aviation transponder code signifying a general emergency. Moments later, the transponder was switched to squawk 7500, the international code dedicated to reporting unlawful interference or hijacking. The rapid drop in altitude caused immediate alarm throughout the passenger cabin as the aircraft lost 17,000ft within seconds.
Passengers Witness Severe Rollercoaster Drop
Recounting the frightening ordeal, passenger Almog Itali explained that the plane abruptly began dropping like a rollercoaster under intense gravitational forces. He noted that the aircraft plunged rapidly for 20 to 30 seconds before momentarily leveling out, only to begin falling steeply once again. Recognizing that an unprecedented emergency was unfolding behind the cockpit door, people began moving swiftly toward the front of the cabin.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog later revealed that the alert was first raised by an Israeli traveler named Tali Manes, who detected sounds of a severe commotion and distress emanating from the flight deck. Despite suffering serious physical wounds from the axe attack, the Indian captain, Capt Smit Machchhar, managed to unlock and open the cockpit door, granting access to those outside. Tali's husband, Zvika Manes, along with three other passengers—Yaniv Hayun, Dr Shota Musayev, and Asaf Rajuan—rushed into the flight deck to confront the attacker.
Subduing the Assailant and Stabilizing the Jet
Inside the flight deck, the situation was critical. In remarks shared through a video from the prime minister's office, Yaniv Hayun stated that the attacker was actively trying to destroy the navigation and flight instruments to completely disable the airliner. Reacting instantly, Hayun locked the co-pilot into a chokehold and dragged him out of the cockpit into the aisle, where fellow passengers assisted in pinning the assailant firmly to the floor.
Hayun then reached for the flight controls to halt the violent dive. By pulling on the controls, he managed to level the aircraft out slightly until an off-duty pilot on board stepped in to take formal operational control of the cockpit. Meanwhile, in the main cabin, Zvika Manes and other passengers restrained the attacker by binding him with his own zip ties alongside cords from multimedia entertainment headphones. Once pinned, the subdued attacker repeatedly screamed at the crew, "Kill me, kill me!"
Official Inquiries and Diverted Landing
With the cockpit secured and the attacker restrained, two reserve pilots took the helm and executed a safe diversion landing in Saudi Arabia, ensuring all passengers and crew survived the harrowing incident. The UAE attorney general stated to state media that an exhaustive investigation is currently underway to uncover the full background, circumstances, and motives driving the violent act. According to the Emirates' official news agency, authorities are actively probing whether the incident was connected to any terrorist activity or purpose.
Addressing the event, Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Fox News that the attacker was plainly suicidal and appeared intent on bringing down the entire aircraft, citing his erratic pleas to be killed. Netanyahu added that the individual had undergone Islamist radical indoctrination. In an additional interview with CNN, Netanyahu praised the stabbed captain, the passengers, and the reserve crew, remarking that their bravery managed to prevent a disaster on the scale of 9/11.
Condition and Commendation of the Indian Captain
The government of India praised Capt Smit Machchhar for demonstrating immense courage in the face of grave physical danger. The Indian embassy in the United Arab Emirates confirmed on Thursday that the pilot was in good health and recovering well from his injuries. Capt Machchhar expressed strong optimism about his healing process, stating that he is confident he will achieve a full recovery and return to fitness. His composure in opening the cabin door while under attack proved decisive in enabling passengers to intervene and save the aircraft.
