Street protests across Delhi and Mumbai demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision, known as SIR, of electoral rolls have triggered sharp political pushback. Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju contended that opposition parties, unsettled by successive electoral setbacks, are pursuing a coordinated strategy to erode public faith in democratic governance and constitutional institutions.
Three-Pronged Strategy Targeting Democratic Pillars
The Union Minister outlined that opposition networks have organized distinct factions to carry out focused criticism against different state machinery. According to him, one faction is dedicated to disputing judicial independence, another targets autonomous agencies such as the Election Commission of India, ED, and CBI, while a third focuses on disseminating misleading narratives abroad to dampen national progress.
Detailing the judicial aspect, Rijiju pointed out that this group includes prominent public figures, legal practitioners, and left-leaning activists who systematically challenge court decisions. Whenever the Supreme Court or High Courts deliver rulings aligned with national interests, these groups tend to brand the outcomes as detrimental to judicial independence. He maintained that this faction attempts to cultivate an impression that the judiciary favors the government, subsequently directing personal attacks toward individual judges.
Sustained Scrutiny on Election Body and Investigative Agencies
Addressing the second faction, Rijiju asserted that constitutional and regulatory entities, including the Election Commission, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Central Bureau of Investigation, are facing systematic reputational damage. The objective, he observed, is to disparage the organizational integrity of these watchdogs so that ordinary citizens begin questioning even their legitimate and routine functioning.
Overseas Engagements and Scrutiny of Economic Metrics
Turning to the third group, the Minister stated that misleading material is being circulated to induce apprehension and discontent among younger citizens. He argued that certain individuals travel abroad to seek backing from external actors hostile to India, subsequently disputing national GDP figures and questioning the country's broader democratic achievements. He characterized this multi-pronged approach as an effort aimed at destabilizing national progress.
Standard Electoral Roll Correction Versus Public Agitation
Regarding the controversy surrounding the voter list revision, Rijiju underscored that legitimate voters facing omission typically resolve grievances through designated administrative avenues. Genuine citizens make formal representations to election authorities and furnish documentation under established rules. He argued that orchestrating sudden public demonstrations and challenging the Election Commission without presenting documented evidence reflects a premeditated design backed by external elements.
Remarks on Prime Ministerial Engagements and Opposition Conduct
Responding to opposition criticisms led by Rahul Gandhi regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with international leaders, Rijiju stated that the Prime Minister remains detached from political mockery. However, he noted that cabinet members feel disturbed by the behavior displayed by the Leader of the Opposition. Rijiju remarked that such conduct does not align with the constitutional dignity expected from a senior parliamentary office.
