Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma will move a formal resolution in the state Legislative Assembly on Thursday to officially designate the revered Mizo song "Ro Min Relsak Ang Che" as the state's official anthem. According to official sources, the resolution is anticipated to receive unanimous approval following detailed discussions among the members of the House. This legislative initiative represents a formal ratification of a decision taken earlier by the state Cabinet during its meeting on August 10.
Origin and Significance of the Song
"Ro Min Relsak Ang Che", which translates to "Be Thou our Counsellor", was composed and written in 1947 by the legendary Mizo writer and composer Rokunga. Over the decades, the composition has held deep cultural significance for the people of the region. During the period of insurgency in the state, the Mizo National Front (MNF) declared it as the official Mizo anthem. Even though the song lacked formal governmental endorsement for several decades, it continued to be widely embraced and revered as the de facto state anthem by the populace.
Educational Directives and Additional Legislative Business
The process of integrating the song into public life received official encouragement in 2022. At that time, the MNF-led state government issued directives to educational institutions across Mizoram, requiring students to sing "Ro Min Relsak Ang Che" during morning assemblies prior to commencing daily classes.
In addition to the resolution regarding the state song, the state Assembly is scheduled to execute significant legislative business during the current session. Officials indicated that the House will introduce two amendment bills along with new primary legislation titled The Mizoram (Land Survey and Settlement Operation) Bill, 2026. The Assembly is expected to consider, deliberate upon, and pass these legislative proposals before adjourning sine die on Thursday evening.
