In a major move to tackle faculty vacancies across state-run educational institutions, the Mizoram government has granted approval for the phased hiring of more than 1,300 teachers across primary, middle, and high schools. The decision followed a comprehensive review meeting of the School Education department on Tuesday, which evaluated overall staffing requirements and the operational health of government schools throughout the state. The session was jointly chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Education Minister Vanlalthlana.
Breakdown of Teaching Vacancies Across School Tiers
According to official details, the state has cleared 671 regular primary school teacher positions to be filled in progressive phases, with an initial batch of 100 appointments slated for completion within the current financial year. This phased rollout is aimed at systematically reinforcing foundational classrooms across the state.
At the middle school level, the government cleared contractual recruitment for 544 teaching posts, scheduling 212 of these appointments to take place during the current financial year. High schools will see 107 regular teacher posts recruited in phases, which includes filling 57 positions in the ongoing financial cycle.
Strengthening Educational Administration and Cadre Structure
Beyond classroom staffing, the review examined pressing vacancies across essential supervisory ranks, notably District Education Officers (DEOs) and Sub-Divisional Education Officers (SDEOs). A proposal to elevate Circle Education Officers into SDEO roles through promotions was deliberated, with the administration agreeing to expedite the movement to clear backlogs.
Furthermore, an official statement noted that the proposed Mizoram Education Service framework is expected to be placed before the Council of Ministers at the earliest date possible. Authorities also evaluated operations and staff strength within the Hindi Education Officer setup, the Adult Education Wing, and the Physical Education Wing, with direct recruitment under active consideration for Hindi Education Officer vacancies.
PPP Model Exploration and Institutional Rationalisation
The strategic session, which brought together senior functionaries from School Education, Finance, and Personnel and Administrative Reforms departments, took a holistic view of teacher distribution across the state. In an effort to streamline state schooling resources, the government is considering the operation of select schools under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The leadership also deliberated proposals to merge or shutter institutions reporting minimal student enrolment as part of a broader drive to rationalise the state school education network.
