Mizoram marked a major transportation milestone as the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line completed its first operational year. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, the corridor has brought direct rail connectivity to the threshold of state capital Aizawl for the first time. The development has significantly reduced the hilly state's long-standing reliance on road networks, giving a massive push to civilian movement, tourism, and supply chain logistics across the region.
Over 1,100 Trips and Rs 54 Crore Revenue Recorded
Official statistics released by railway authorities indicate that the Bairabi-Sairang line handled over 1,100 train trips and catered to more than 15 lakh passengers during its inaugural year of operation. Passenger ticket sales alone yielded Rs 54 crore in earnings for Indian Railways. Sairang railway station, functioning as the line's key terminal near Aizawl, registered over 5.54 lakh passenger movements during the twelve-month period, maintaining a steady daily average footfall of around 3,300 commuters.
An Engineering Triumph Across Difficult Terrain
Constructing the railway line involved overcoming formidable geographic and engineering hurdles across steep mountain slopes, rivers, and deep gorges. The 51.38 km alignment incorporates 153 bridges, comprising 55 major bridges and 88 minor bridges, alongside 10 road overbridges and underbridges. Six of these bridge structures exceed a height of 70 metres, with the tallest bridge standing at 114 metres. Furthermore, the route passes through 45 tunnels spanning a combined distance of nearly 16 km. The line links Bairabi in southern Assam with Sairang through four newly built intermediate stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang.
Direct Long-Distance Connectivity and New Regional Routes
The railway link has integrated Mizoram into the national rail matrix with dedicated long-distance express services. Three primary routes connect Sairang directly to key commercial, educational, and healthcare hubs including Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi. The introduction of the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express gave Mizoram its very first premium train service directly to the national capital. Additionally, in January 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the Sairang-Silchar passenger service, establishing a crucial daily rail link between Mizoram and southern Assam.
Logistical Transformation and Local Community Engagement
Beyond passenger mobility, the Bairabi-Sairang rail corridor has fundamentally reshaped Mizoram's supply chain logistics. Freight movement via train has enabled bulk transport of essential commodities, motor vehicles, and infrastructure raw materials straight to the outskirts of Aizawl. Officials emphasized that rail freight offers a safer, more economical, and schedule-predictable alternative compared to traditional road transport. Concurrently, Sairang station has turned into a hub for community participation, hosting environmental drives and tree plantation initiatives supported by local residents during its successful first year.
