A 29-year-old Indian Army soldier lost his life after being brutally assaulted by a group of youths following a road dispute in Kolasib district of Mizoram. The victim, identified as Zakaria Lalhriattluanga, was returning home on sanctioned leave when the violence erupted. As the primary provider for his elderly parents, his sudden death has left the household in severe emotional and financial distress, prompting appeals for stringent legal action against the culprits.
Dispute Triggered by Poor Road Quality and Slow Traffic
The fatal clash occurred on September 20 along National Highway 306, on the stretch connecting Bualpui and Thingdawl. Zakaria was travelling toward his native village of New Builum near Kolasib town alongside his friend John Laltanpuia, who works as a truck driver. The route had been experiencing severe congestion and crawl-pace traffic owing to dilapidated road conditions. An argument broke out over the sluggish vehicle movement, which quickly escalated into a violent physical confrontation as a group of youths attacked the soldier and his companion.
Sole Breadwinner for an Elderly Household
Zakaria had enlisted in the Assam Regiment in 2017 and was stationed in Srinagar prior to taking leave. He was the second-youngest among five siblings and shouldered the financial responsibilities of running the house. His 78-year-old father, VL Duailova, is a former pastor, and his mother, Lalthazovi, is 60. Given their advanced age and health limitations, neither parent is capable of generating income.
Unresolved Debts and a Shattered Family
The loss has compounded the family's vulnerabilities, especially since the young jawan had borrowed funds to construct their home. Explaining the magnitude of their grief, his mother Lalthazovi stated,
"Zakaria was the sole breadwinner of our family. He was everything to us as we are no longer able to earn because of our age. He had also taken loans to construct our house. His death has left us devastated."With the household's only income abruptly cut off, the family faces immense financial uncertainty alongside the bereavement.
Eight Suspects Apprehended Amid Community Outcry
Law enforcement authorities have apprehended eight people in connection with the fatal assault, comprising five adult men, one adult woman, and two minors. According to Kolasib Superintendent of Police Lalrinpuia Varte, five of the adult suspects were remanded to judicial custody, while the two underage youths were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Monday.
Public fury over the killing prompted villagers from New Builum to stage a massive agitation outside the Kolasib district jail on Tuesday. Demonstrators demanded strict punishment under the law and insisted that the authorities publicly disclose the identities of the suspects. Leaders from the New Builum branch of the Young Mizo Association stated that police subsequently presented the accused before the crowd to confirm their identities, with several protesters pressing for capital punishment.
