Railway operations along the vital Bairabi-Sairang corridor in Mizoram came to a sudden halt on Wednesday following intense rainfall in the region. The downpour triggered an overflow of rainwater and mud onto the tracks between Kawnpui and Mualkhang, creating dangerous obstructions that prompted the Northeast Frontier Railway to temporarily halt train movements across the affected stretch as a precautionary safety measure.
Safety Protocol Enacted and Restoration Underway
Railway authorities explained that the decision to halt operations was implemented to avert any safety risks following track obstructions caused by the sludge. Engineering teams and ground personnel immediately mobilized to inspect the damaged segment, initiating clearing operations and restorative repairs to make the rail corridor operational again. Normal traffic will resume once technical evaluations confirm the track is fully safe for transit.
Twenty Feeder Buses Arranged for Stranded Travellers
To alleviate the hardship faced by passengers caught mid-journey due to the abrupt disruption, railway officials stationed a fleet of 20 buses at Bairabi station. These vehicles were deployed to transport passengers arriving on the Kolkata-Sairang Express and the Silchar-Sairang Express directly to Sairang and the capital city of Aizawl, ensuring travelers could reach their final destinations without extended delays.
Comprehensive List of Cancelled and Short-Terminated Services
The disruption has heavily impacted train movement on this strategic route connecting Mizoram's capital region to the broader national rail network. Authorities confirmed that the Sairang-Guwahati Express scheduled for departure on September 30 and the Sairang-Silchar Express scheduled for October 1 have been completely cancelled. Furthermore, several key long-distance services have been truncated
- The Silchar-Sairang Express that commenced on Wednesday is now terminating at Bairabi, leaving its Bairabi-Sairang segment cancelled.
- The Kolkata-Sairang Express which began its run on September 29 will also end its journey at Bairabi, with the remaining leg to Sairang called off.
- The Sairang-Kolkata Express scheduled to leave on October 1 will now originate from Hailakandi instead, cancelling operations between Sairang and Hailakandi.
- The Guwahati-Sairang Express that departed on Wednesday will terminate short at Hailakandi, cancelling the Hailakandi-Sairang portion of the route.
Railway administrators have urged all ticket holders and prospective passengers to carefully review the revised operational timetables and make necessary travel adjustments before heading to stations.
