Mizoram experienced a substantial surge in visitor arrivals during the first half of 2026, welcoming nearly 5.37 lakh visitors between January and June. Presenting the figures in the State Assembly on Thursday, State Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar highlighted that domestic travelers formed the vast majority of these arrivals, underlining the growing appeal of the northeastern state among Indian tourists.
Surge in Domestic and Overseas Visitor Arrivals
Detailed data submitted to the Assembly reveals that more than 5.28 lakh domestic tourists traveled to Mizoram during the six-month period. In addition, around 8,700 international travelers visited the state between January and June. Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar noted that throughout this period, the state administration recorded no incidents of tourists causing public disturbances or facing safety issues during their stay, reflecting a peaceful and welcoming environment across local destinations.
Central Funds and Infrastructure Expansion
To bolster tourism facilities across the state, the Zoram People’s Movement government has secured Rs 610.78 crore in central assistance. The Tourism Minister explained that these funds are being actively deployed to modernize regional infrastructure and improve travel accessibility. Currently, as many as 14 major tourism infrastructure projects are undergoing execution across different districts.
Alongside large-scale projects, targeted financial backing from the central government is supporting the creation of 199 new homestays during the ongoing financial year. This effort aims to expand room availability while allowing visitors to experience local Mizo culture firsthand.
Aizawl as Winter Capital and Community Sensitisation
The state government is pursuing a strategic push to position the state capital, Aizawl, as the "Winter Capital of India." Plans are underway to host a major Winter Festival along with several cultural and seasonal events to draw travelers during the colder months. To prepare host communities, the Tourism Department has partnered with the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA). Together, they are conducting public awareness drives to encourage hospitality and sensitise residents about tourist engagement.
Concurrently, authorities have intensified regulatory inspections of hospitality establishments. Officials are conducting regular audits of hotels, guesthouses, and homestays to ensure strict compliance with safety, hygiene, and pricing standards.
Entrepreneurial Support, Church Outreach, and Legal Frameworks
To expand the local tourism ecosystem, the government is backing local startups and young entrepreneurs through specialized programs such as 'Bana Kaih' and UNNATI. The broader development strategy focuses on community-based tourism, active social media promotion, improved inter-departmental coordination, and comprehensive skill training for hospitality personnel. Minister Hmar emphasized that long-term growth in visitor numbers will generate employment, boost demand for locally manufactured products, and attract private capital.
To maintain high standards, Mizoram enforces strict regulatory mechanisms, including the Mizoram Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020, alongside the Mizoram (Registration of Tourist Trade) Act, 2020, and its corresponding 2020 Rules. Furthermore, the Tourism Department has opened dialogue with religious bodies, including the Council of Churches in Mizoram (CCM) and the Mizoram Presbyterian Church (Synod), to involve local church networks in welcoming and guiding incoming tourists, with plans to expand this outreach to other church groups soon.
