In a historic judicial development for Mizoram, Aizawl District and Sessions Judge Helen Dawngliani is poised to take charge as a judge of the Gauhati High Court. The Supreme Court Collegium formally cleared her elevation during its high-level meeting held on Tuesday. This decision marks a significant milestone in the regional judiciary, designating her as only the second Mizo woman to ever be elevated to the High Court bench.
Collegium Approval and Dual Appointments
The recommendation emerged from the Supreme Court Collegium's Tuesday session, where members evaluated candidates for judicial vacancies in the northeastern region. Alongside Helen Dawngliani, the Collegium also approved the appointment of Nchumbemo Mozhui as a judge of the Gauhati High Court. Official confirmations indicate that both names have been forwarded to complete the standard appointment procedure for the High Court elevation.
Career Trajectory and Legal Service
Dawngliani brings extensive legal and administrative experience to her new role, currently serving as the District and Sessions Judge at the Aizawl District Court. Her judicial journey began on May 24, 2011, when she officially joined the Mizoram Judicial Service after obtaining her academic credentials in BA (Hons) and LLB degrees.
Over more than a decade of public service, Dawngliani has occupied several key postings across the state's legal framework. She previously served as Additional District and Sessions Judge at the district court facilities in both Aizawl and Lunglei. Her credentials also include serving as the Registrar of the Gauhati High Court, where she managed administrative and court operations. Furthermore, from April 2021 until July 2024, she took on executive duties as the secretary to the Law and Judicial department under the Mizoram state government. Her legal practice also includes tenure as a Government Advocate-cum-Additional Public Prosecutor representing cases before the Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court.
Following Historic Footsteps
With her upcoming appointment, Dawngliani becomes the second Mizo woman to reach the Gauhati High Court bench. She follows Justice Marli Vankung, who created judicial history as the very first Mizo woman appointed to the Gauhati High Court. Justice Vankung officially retired from her post on March 3 this year, leaving a lasting legacy that Dawngliani is now set to continue for Mizoram and the broader northeastern legal fraternity.
