Advocating for the rollout of the Uniform Civil Code in Mizoram, state Bharatiya Janata Party chief and legislator K Hrahmo stated that the legal framework could significantly strengthen safeguards for Mizo women. Addressing a party political gathering in Aizawl on Monday, Hrahmo pointed out that key matters such as marriage regulations, property entitlements, and protection against spousal abandonment would become far more secure under the legislation. He argued that public opposition to central laws frequently stems from premature apprehensions rather than an accurate grasp of statutory provisions, leading citizens to mistakenly fear that their regional interests are under threat.
Tribal Identity and Legislative Scope
The legislator representing the Tipa constituency in Siaha district emphasized that any debate over enacting the Uniform Civil Code in Mizoram must evaluate the state's tribal makeup alongside its specific local dynamics. Hrahmo maintained that tribal populations are not automatically brought under the legislation's umbrella. To substantiate this, he noted that administrations in states that have already enacted civil codes have consciously exempted their tribal demographics from the legal requirements, thereby safeguarding their customary practices.
Inter-Community Marriages and Exploitation Concerns
Hrahmo urged that the relevance of the Uniform Civil Code be examined specifically through the lens of the non-tribal population residing in Mizoram, particularly involving unions between non-tribal men and local Mizo women. He pointed out serious irregularities, alleging that certain non-tribal men enter into multiple marriages with local women despite having living spouses elsewhere. Furthermore, he claimed that several such unions were primarily arranged around local commercial interests, resulting in women and dependent children being discarded without maintenance or financial support whenever these ventures collapsed.
Mandatory Monogamy and Equitable Asset Division
Detailing the statutory benefits, the state BJP president highlighted that the Uniform Civil Code establishes strict monogamy rules and sets fair parameters for dividing assets upon marital dissolution. Hrahmo explained that these legal instruments would shield Mizo women from vulnerability, systemic exploitation, and unaddressed desertion. Taking aim at political opponents, he accused the Congress of irresponsibly framing the legislation as an existential danger to Mizoram's populace, thereby fueling doubts among individuals unfamiliar with the text of the law.
