Air connectivity from Bareilly is set for a significant expansion as Akasa Air prepares to launch services from the local airport, joining existing carrier IndiGo. Scheduled tentatively for the upcoming winter season, these upcoming routes aim to link the region directly with major tourist and commercial centers, including Goa, Srinagar, and key cities across South India and Purvanchal. This development is expected to transform regional mobility, opening fresh avenues for trade, employment, and higher education for residents in and around the city.
Flight Proposals and Operational Timelines
The expansion plan took shape after Akasa Air formally submitted a proposal to the Bareilly Airport administration to operate on these new domestic sectors. Official approval has been granted for the initiative, and authorities are currently assessing slot availability alongside overall air traffic across different flight corridors. Airport Director Avadhesh Agarwal indicated that operations are likely to begin in the winter months following the completion of administrative procedures. "Flights on new routes may commence in winter once necessary formalities are completed," Agarwal noted regarding the upcoming schedule.
Economic and Educational Advantages for Rohilkhand
Enhanced air links promise substantial benefits for the local business community in Bareilly and neighbouring districts. Local entrepreneurs will gain faster access to commercial hubs in South India and coastal markets like Goa, drastically reducing travel time previously spent on long distance trains or road transport for business negotiations. Furthermore, easier travel access will enable outside investors and corporate executives to visit Bareilly conveniently, bolstering local commercial activities. The enhanced connectivity also addresses the needs of a large student population from the region pursuing higher studies in southern and western states, offering quicker travel options for students and their families.
Existing Destinations and Planned Route Expansion
Currently, Bareilly Airport manages regular domestic services connecting passengers to major metro areas including Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai, Delhi, and Noida. Under the new expansion roadmap, proposals are being actively evaluated to connect Bareilly to a broader network of destinations. These proposed routes include Lucknow, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kushinagar, Goa, Srinagar, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Guwahati, and Jaipur, positioning the regional airport as a prominent aviation node in northern Uttar Pradesh.
