Dr Kulkarni currently serves as the national vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha. In Uttar Pradesh, social arithmetic plays a defining role in electoral outcomes. Being a prominent Brahmin face with a sustained record on women's issues, her appointment aims to consolidate support among both female voters and the community across various assembly segments.
Her public profile also aligns with strong ideological stances. In October 2025, she drew wide public attention in Pune after leading a protest against women offering namaz at the historic Shaniwar Wada complex and subsequently performing a purification ritual using cow urine. The episode reinforced her positioning among the party's core ideological base.
Beyond ideological alignment, her academic rigor and disciplined work ethic played a role in the decision. Before transitioning into full-time politics, she served as an assistant professor at an engineering college. The party intends to utilize her administrative and pedagogical background to refine booth management systems and deepen engagement with educated professionals. Furthermore, her established working rapport with Vinod Tawde is expected to streamline coordination. Academic Background and Transition to Public Service
Known formally as Dr Medha Vishram Kulkarni, she belongs to Pune, Maharashtra, and built a substantial career in higher education before stepping into political office. She earned her bachelor of science degree from Abasaheb Garware College in Pune in 1989. Continuing her academic pursuits, she secured a BEd in 1991, followed by an MEd in 1994. Deepening her scholastic credentials, she completed her PhD from Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2021. Prior to entering public life full-time, she worked as an assistant professor at Cummins College of Engineering for Women in Pune.
Political Trajectory: From Municipal Councillor to Uttar Pradesh Assignment
Dr Kulkarni began her elective political journey at the municipal level, serving three terms as a councillor in the Pune Municipal Corporation, which provided her with grassroots governance experience.
Between 2014 and 2019, she served her first legislative term. In the 2014 assembly polls, she contested from Pune's Kothrud constituency, winning by a decisive margin and spending her tenure prioritizing civic infrastructure and constituency development.
During the 2019 state elections, the party leadership reassigned the Kothrud seat to Chandrakant Patil, leaving her without a ticket. Despite initial disappointment over being bypassed, she chose not to break ranks, maintaining disciplined party loyalty over the subsequent years.
In recognition of that organizational loyalty, the party nominated her to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra in February 2024. Her parliamentary responsibilities grew further in May 2026 when she was appointed chairperson of the parliamentary committee overseeing science, technology, and environment.
