Public distribution outlets in Himachal Pradesh are transitioning to high-speed internet connectivity to streamline foodgrain distribution across the state. The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has initiated the rollout of modern point-of-sale equipment to eliminate prolonged waiting periods. This systematic infrastructure upgrade is slated to assist 1958895 ration cardholders who frequently encountered delays during essential grocery collections.
All 841 Depot Operators in Mandi District Equipped
Under this initiative, distribution staff have already delivered 4G-enabled machines to all 841 depot operators operating within Mandi district. Alongside the hardware handover, departmental authorities conducted operational training sessions to instruct operators on navigating the new system. The newly deployed hardware features upgraded connectivity modules and faster data processing, intended to minimize the signal dropouts that previously paralyzed depot transactions.
Rollout Awaits Final Clearance of State Software
Brijendra Singh, the District Controller of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs for Mandi, confirmed that previous 2G terminals have been systematically phased out in favor of 4G devices equipped with modern technical specifications. He stated that the state government plans to manage these units using its proprietary software suite, which is currently undergoing final verification checks. As soon as the internal software receives final operational approval, digital ration distribution through the 4G machines will formally commence across the network.
Relief for Depot Holders After Prolonged Operational Hurdles
The arrival of higher-speed hardware has been welcomed by local store representatives who dealt with constant connectivity failures. Sanjeev Da Silva, president of the Mandi Urban Depot Holders Association, explained that persistent network glitches on obsolete 2G terminals caused widespread disruptions and extensive queues during daily distribution. Da Silva noted that resolving these device issues addresses a long-standing demand raised by depot operators. The supply of new units across fair price stores throughout Himachal Pradesh is now complete, leaving software activation as the sole remaining milestone.
