The political landscape in the Chikhli Assembly constituency of Maharashtra's Buldhana district witnessed a major late-night shift on Monday. Former Congress legislator and previous district party chief Rahul Bondre abruptly halted his move to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, deciding instead to remain within the Congress fold.
Scheduled Induction Event in Mumbai Halted
Rahul Bondre was slated to formally join the BJP on September 22 in Mumbai, an event arranged in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Bondre had previously announced his transition toward the BJP on social media platforms, triggering momentum among his local political base. A significant number of his grassroots supporters had already travelled to Mumbai, and preparations for the induction were actively underway when the political equation transformed.
High Command Intervention and Strategic Assurance
Upon receiving confirmation of the imminent defection, the central Congress leadership stepped in immediately. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi placed a direct late-night phone call to Rahul Bondre, advising him against making any hasty departure from the party. During their exchange, the leadership stressed that Bondre remained a loyal and valued party worker and affirmed that the organisation firmly stood behind him.

During the interaction, an emotional Rahul Bondre expressed that the direct communication gave him renewed strength to contest political challenges. He stated that regardless of any potential personal setbacks or losses, he remained committed to standing alongside Rahul Gandhi in the broader struggle.
