Fresh Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal Triggers Relentless Downpours Across Tamil Nadu and Prompts District Closures

Intense weather systems over the Bay of Bengal and Comorin region bring heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, prompting educational institution closures in multiple districts on October 23.

Intense weather activity has gripped the southern peninsula as atmospheric disturbances over the ocean continue to pump dense moisture across the mainland. The formation of a fresh low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with an active cyclonic circulation in the adjacent seas, has unleashed widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Kerala. Having endured two consecutive days of torrential downpours and electrical storms, the region faces an extended period of turbulent weather with no immediate respite anticipated until at least October 27, 2026. Taking cognizance of the escalating risk, the India Meteorological Department has sounded extensive color-coded weather warnings across numerous districts, compelling regional administrative authorities to declare precautionary holidays for schools and educational institutions on October 23, 2026.

Low-Pressure System Over Comorin and Extended Rainfall Warnings

According to the official forecast bulletins issued by the India Meteorological Department, a well-marked low-pressure area prevailing over the Comorin area and adjoining south Tamil Nadu and Kerala is driving the ongoing wet spell. Under its direct influence, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted to batter Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from October 22 through October 26, 2026. Simultaneously, Kerala is slated to experience similar intensely wet conditions between October 22 and October 25, 2026. Forecasters have cautioned that atmospheric instability will trigger sharp showers capable of inundating low-lying residential sectors and overwhelming urban drainage networks.

The western ghats and the extreme southern coastline are positioned directly along the path of maximum precipitation. Meteorologists have issued warnings of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by intense thunderstorms, lightning activity, and gusty winds reaching speeds between 40 and 50 kmph for the districts of Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, and Coimbatore. Because hilly terrains face heightened risks of flash runoff, localized mudslides, and falling trees under prolonged saturation, local disaster response teams across these three districts have been placed on heightened readiness, with advisories discouraging unessential travel through ghat corridors.

Extensive Weather Alerts Across Chennai, Madurai, and Neighboring Belts

The footprint of the rain band extends well beyond the western hills, encompassing delta regions, industrial belts, and central plains. The meteorological agency has flagged several dozen locations for isolated heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds ranging between 40 and 50 kmph, including

  • Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, and Tiruchirappalli
  • Tenkasi, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, and Virudhunagar
  • Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai
  • Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Tirunelveli
  • Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villuppuram, Tiruppur, and Perambalur
  • Chennai, Tiruvallur, along with Puducherry and Karaikal

For the remaining geographical parts of Tamil Nadu, weather authorities anticipate moderate rainfall across multiple locations, punctuated by occasional thunder, lightning, and squally gusts of 40 to 50 kmph.

Administrative Orders on Educational Institutions for October 23

In response to local precipitation levels and ground waterlogging, District Collectors have exercised administrative discretion regarding institutional operations. In Tiruvannamalai district, authorities declared that both schools and colleges will remain completely shut on Thursday, October 23, 2026, to protect students from severe weather hazards. In contrast, the administrations of Villupuram and Kallakurichi districts restricted the shutdown exclusively to schools, permitting colleges to function on their normal schedules.

A divergent decision came from Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram districts, where collectors reviewed field data and confirmed that schools and colleges would remain open as customary. In Chennai, which had enacted a blanket school closure on October 22 following paralyzing citywide rains, no fresh notification was released regarding operations for October 23. Parents, guardians, and students in the state capital have been encouraged to stay in close contact with respective school principals and municipal helplines to verify early morning operational statuses before setting out.

Seeing this weather in South India reminds me of our monsoon days back in UP when waterlogging brings everything to a halt. Closing schools for kids' safety is definitely the right call.

Rohan, closing schools is fine, but holidays alone don't fix things. The administration should have actually arranged for water drainage on the ground.
