Recent student protests at Jantar Mantar regarding the NEET paper leak controversy have sparked intense debate over the deployment of pellet guns. Following allegations that pellet guns were fired at demonstrators, several graphic images circulated showing small iron pellets embedded deeply inside human bodies. While anger has mounted among students and supporters, the weapon is sometimes framed as a less lethal alternative. This raises critical questions about the true reality of pellet guns, the kind of damage they inflict when metal projectiles pierce the body, and just how lethal they really are.
The History and Past Injury Statistics of Pellet Guns in India
To fully grasp the dangers posed by this weapon, it is essential to look back at its previous deployment history in India. Pellet guns were first widely used in 2016 during violent crowd control operations in Jammu and Kashmir following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. Jammu and Kashmir Police and paramilitary forces deployed these weapons to scatter unruly crowds and manage violent protestors. Hundreds of individuals suffered severe physical trauma from pellet impacts during those operations.
Official figures tabled by the Jammu and Kashmir government in the legislative assembly revealed that between July 8, 2016, and February 27, 2017, approximately 6,221 people sustained injuries from pellet guns. Among these casualties, 728 individuals suffered direct pellet trauma to their eyes, resulting in 54 people completely losing their eyesight. During that period, hundreds of patients required critical surgeries at specialized eye hospitals, particularly in Srinagar, to extract metal fragments from their eyes. Several victims suffered extensive, permanent damage to one or both eyes.
How Pellet Projectiles Impact Different Parts of the Body
It is important to note that the destructive impact of pellet gun ammunition is not restricted to the eyes alone, as other parts of the human body are equally vulnerable. Pellets fired from these guns consist of tiny spherical metal particles that instantly pierce the skin and become lodged deep within the underlying muscle tissue. When a person is struck by a pellet, the severity of the injury depends entirely on the specific body part impacted and the firing distance.
Skin injuries typically manifest as severe abrasions, swelling, intense pain, embedded metallic fragments, and persistent bleeding. The most severe threat occurs when pellets strike the eye, potentially destroying the cornea and retina, triggering intraocular hemorrhage, causing permanent vision loss or complete blindness, and frequently necessitating complex surgical intervention. Facial impacts can fracture the nasal bones, lips, or jawbone while leaving permanent disfigurement. Furthermore, strikes to the chest or abdomen cause deep wounds that can compromise the lungs or other internal organs, particularly at close range, while unextracted pellets or improper wound care routinely lead to dangerous infections.
Essential safety measures must be followed immediately if someone is struck. Initial bleeding should be controlled by pressing a clean cloth firmly against the wound. Immediate hospitalization is mandatory if a pellet penetrates the eye, face, neck, chest, or abdomen. Individuals must never attempt to extract embedded pellets on their own. In case of eye injuries, rubbing the affected area should be strictly avoided in favor of seeking urgent ophthalmological or emergency medical care. Ultimately, pellet gun injuries must never be underestimated, as their destructive potential is dictated entirely by where the projectile lands on the body.
