A tragic accident occurred on Saturday in Chirau village, located within the Badgaon police station jurisdiction of Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, leading to the loss of two lives. A 45-year-old man and his 12-year-old nephew died after being buried under a massive mound of earth inside a nearly 30-foot deep pit excavated near a tubewell. Despite extensive rescue efforts, both victims succumbed to their injuries after being extracted from the debris.
Sudden Earth Collapse During Brick Extraction Work
According to details provided by Badgaon Police Station SHO Narendra Bhadana, the incident transpired on Saturday when 45-year-old Rajendra, a resident of Chirau village, descended into the 30-foot pit near a tubewell to extract bricks. His 12-year-old nephew, Gaurav, was sitting at the upper edge of the pit watching him. Without warning, a large section of loose earth collapsed from the top. The sudden cave-in knocked Gaurav directly into the pit, instantly trapping both uncle and nephew underneath tons of fallen soil.
Intensive Machinery-Assisted Rescue Effort at the Site
The sudden collapse created panic across the village as family members and local residents rushed to the spot. Authorities were alerted promptly, bringing officers from Badgaon police station alongside dedicated rescue teams to the scene. Earth-moving equipment, including a JCB machine, was brought in to clear the heavy earth mound as swiftly and carefully as possible to avoid causing further harm to those trapped below.
After continuous hard work, rescuers managed to pull Rajendra out of the pit first. He was immediately transported via ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment. The rescue team persisted for several hours before successfully retrieving 12-year-old Gaurav from under the soil. He was also rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, but attending doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Post-Mortem Procedures and Grief Across the Village
Police have taken custody of both bodies and dispatched them for formal post-mortem examinations. The untimely deaths of the uncle and his young nephew have plunged the entire Chirau village into deep mourning and sorrow.
