Residents across Mumbai are facing a fifteen percent reduction in their water supply starting today, following an official notification from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation regarding necessary infrastructure upgrades. This planned restriction is designed to facilitate crucial technical improvements at a major pumping facility, impacting numerous residential neighborhoods throughout the metropolis.
Schedule and Duration of the Disruption
The scheduled water service reduction begins at 9:00 am on Tuesday, July 28, and will remain in effect until 5:00 am on Wednesday, July 29, lasting for a total duration of twenty hours. This temporary interruption stems from engineering works at the Mumbai-3A Pumping Station located in Panjrapur, which feeds treated water into the distribution network.
Reason Behind the Technical Shutdown
The core objective of this operation is the replacement of existing 6.6 kV high-voltage control panels managed by the hydraulic engineering department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. During this initial phase of the project, four out of the ten legacy control panels are being replaced. Authorities noted that safely executing this modernization plan makes a complete shutdown of the pumping station for approximately twenty hours unavoidable.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that Mumbai has already been operating under a ten percent water supply reduction since the onset of the summer season, adding to the cumulative impact on local households.
Affected Neighborhoods Across the City
The fifteen percent decrease in water availability will directly impact multiple zones, including both the Western Suburbs and the Eastern Suburbs. In the Western Suburbs, the affected areas encompass Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Vile Parle, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, and Dahisar. Meanwhile, neighborhoods in the Eastern Suburbs facing supply issues include Kurla, Vidyavihar, Chembur, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup, Mulund, and Powai.
